Dash Cam

After a few very scary moments of not my making over the holiday, I'm thinking of getting a dash cam. Has anyone else used one of these and do you have any recommendations?

There are loads of apps for smart phones, if you search for dash cam.

Put a cradle on your dash and job done.

What you want is one that constantly records 5 mins on a loop so if you have an incident you can save that loop, that way you don't store loads of movie that you don't need.

The ones I have seen in the App Store look excellent and all for a couple of quid.

The only negative is you need to remember to turn it on each time you get in the car, so I can see your point about going for a dedicated system.

Lots of drivers are going for these systems.

I've been seriously tempted to equip my van with all round cameras to try it out as I do around 30k a year and I'm far more likely to be down around the legal speed in that one! I think they could be double edged in that they could incriminate you as much as vilify your position....

They cost a bit, but the GoPro's consistently get good reviews. I think Dan has one and has had some great results. Up to 64 gig, so more than enough space to record most journeys.

I've got a GoPro Hero 2 and a Hero 3 ........ a bit OTT for dash cams though I think. Hero 3 does have a loop video record facility and you would have almost cinema quality playback of the incident !

I thnk you're right the Go Pro is a little more than I'm after but thanks for the pointer and it is really a dedicated system that I'm after.

Found these guys who have a few systems from £45 to £90. http://www.carcamwarehouse.com/ . Apperently Adrian Flux are offering 15% off of car insurance if the top model is installed.

I'm with Ren on the GoPro 3 - bought one before Christmas to make mountain biking videos (& record misdemeanours en route to work) but got the suction cup for the car too. Can record in loop but more importantly super slow mo tyre slip & smoke!!!! A bit pricy (if you can find one) but awesome 1440p HD fun!!

I'd say that is just the ticket. Get 2 of the cheaper ones and have them front and back.

Isn't the big advantage of the GoPro the weatherproof casing so you can attach externally. The ones from carcam warehouse look like they could only be used inside the car but maybe someone can clarify as there is add cent price difference.

GoPro 3 in the uk is about £360 & comes with nothing of note (SDHC card £20, helmet mount £15, car suction £30, roll bar mount £20, new laptop to handle HD £600) but the quality if outstanding & of 'broadcast' standard. I'm a big fan but there's no point in spending that sort of cash if you don't need to also use it for extreme sports! The dashcam option does look good enough to buy one up front & out back (noting the braking power of most modern masers!)
The other col feAture of the GP3 is that it can be controlled by your iPhone & used as a view finder - it's great if your also making a film for your wedding!!

I've mounted my Hero3 to a radio controlled quadcopter for some extreme sport of a different kind ....... First Person View or FPV flying. With an onboard video link down to a pair of video googles it's pretty neat and has quite a few applications that I'm working on.
Here is the latest vid of my local church (a church with it's own quarry !)

Mounted directly on the quadcopter frame using the GoPro standard mounting shoe. I've taken thousands of stills and quiet a few HD videos already - just trying to stabilise it a little more to eliminate the jello effect you can see sometimes.

It's on YouTube as well SF if you can't see the Vimeo video

At last something much cheaper in Oz! Gopro 3 can be bought here with suction cup for about $350 or 200 quid.
