dash-cam: worth it?

This is worth a watch if you ever use valet parking at the airport - even with this footage so hade ti track the owner of the firm down at home to get him to make good the damage.

Without the dashcam I had no chance.

Given the number of reports about 'valet parking' I'm surprised anyone uses these Co's anymore.

The ones we've used at Gatwick don't even go off site (AFAIK) but could be wrong. We book on the Gatwick airport official site.

That sucks, though!

Yes things have moved on now, but we all live and learn ;)

Always get a taxi/lift or park the car myself on site. Seen so many dodgy things with these.

Someone I knew used the valet parking, when they picked the car up their new set of tyres had been swapped off and some barely legal tyres put on!

Call me biased but I would only recommend Official Airport Parking, they have all the correct insurance, equipment (for taking photos of your car prior to parking) and they have their reputation to uphold.

Without dritfing too far, Gatwick were looking at robotic parking before Covid. Whereby you park in one designated spot and a robotic cart would lift your car and park it in a pre-planned and very tight spot. No minimum wage humans wil drive your car, (I think you could keep your keys) and it'll be ready when you return. There's many multistoreys operating this was already. It's the future.

I'm pretty sure we've covered this topic before, but I couldn't find the thread(s). What are the forum's views on dash-cams? Useful, pita. self-incriminating, sent by God to make the world a better place? Or something else?

My car is having some other stuff done and the fitter suggested I think about whether a dash-cam would be a good idea.
Dash cams, a little of all of the above.
Can also assist in reducing your insurance if you tell them. It’s become pretty common in the UK to have a dash cam.

Would not be without a dashcam. Caught my neighbours knocking my GC when parking after only a week of ownership and before I found indoor temp controlled storage. Tbh a minor tap that dislodged one sensor - SI sorted it but everything paid by the fat.... 's insurance. They visibly scowl at us now but who cares, we only only spend a few weeks a year there and are selling up! On the downside our insurance nearly tripled but maybe that's a coincidence! Lol

The only other major one was, I think an attempted crash for cash. We managed to swerve and avoid and sent footage to somerset police - not sure of result exactly but they sent a personalised email a week later saying that the offender was being charged.

I will post the footage if I find it, as I have to say I'm still feel like a bloody legendary driver to survive it intact!!

That's the one I am looking at, seems to have every base covered but upper end of price bracket
Not cheap... but the 4K LTE version, which lets you view the footage remotely via mobile, was even more. I also added the battery so that it can keep an eye out for parking cock-ups and scrotes without draining the car battery. My thinking was that 4K is a bit pointless and remote viewing is of marginal use, but scröte-cam and not draining the car battery is certainly helpful.

Checked mine the other day. Was pleasantly surprised to see it's
a) Working
b) Perfectly usable quality

So 'hooray'

Nope. I mean, you would want to watch it on the big screen, but plates of cars in front of me were perfectly legible, even on the crappy screen on the unit. I suspect you'll be (more than) fine

The ones I've got don't have a screen - I voted for size instead. But if anything exciting happens I can watch it via some **** app on my phone. So 4K still won't be much use.

Thankfully 8th ave not had to view any footage of my cams for sometime, and despite the ability to connect via an app I have always found it easier to pop the memory are out and view on the PC.

I've finally dug out the info on mine that I had fitted about 18 months ago ago. It was Thinkware F800 front and rear. Fitted for £475.00 + VAT.

They seem to work pretty well. No screen on the device, but can link with phone via an App and some sort of dedicated WiFi link.

The front unit was fitted on the passenger side behind the mirror, which keeps it out of the way, but that does make it harder to access the buttons - to hit Format or Keep, for example.
