Always loved the Merak's shape and its great the value has soared, but am I correct in thinking that the engineering in these cars is not great?

If I had the money, the Bora is the one for me, Merak looks but with proper engineering:

I agree I love the Bora. It has the 4.9 V8 which is very similar to that used in the Ghibli and Khamsin so around 350bhp. Think its the same chassis as the Merak and the same love it or hate it Citroen issues, but I've never driven one. They made about 400 of them so much rarer than the Merak. Prices are £100-£150k but I've only seen one RHD for sale in the UK this year which was one that had been modified for racing. I expect there are probably only 40-50 RHD cars out there.

Emblem had a stunner in when I was there on Friday.

That's my car at Emblem - it was misfiring and I wanted Myles to get it running sweetly. He's overhauled the carbs, fitted new distributor cap, HT leads, plugs, coil, fuel pump etc, and is giving th a good check over and sorting some other minor issues. Spoke to him on Saturday and he said it's now running like a dream. Can't wait to collect it.

I bought that car from Dicky six months ago - it cost more than this red one he now has for sale. It's a late ('81) RHD in copper metallic (Rame Metallizato), a well preserved car but with fresh bare metal repaint paint and new magnolia leather interior, and only 30k miles. It looks stunning alright! I think I got great value for money and this red Merak looks equally amazing value at £55k. If I hadn't spent all my money on cars last year I would be biting Dicky's hand off now, even though I'm not keen on red and don't need another Merak! It's just too beautiful and obviously a great investment at that price.

Just called Dicky to possibly buy this - but too late! It's sold, after only being on the market for one day.

It goes to show that even though the classic market may be cooling off a little, really good cars that are priced sensibly still sell.

Yes It has sold. I was just sorting the man math out. Underpriced, whoever got this has bagged a winner. Sure fire investment.

I think it was fairly priced, but I also believe everything we have is fairly priced. Some cars sell quickly, some not so. Sorry to disappoint Ewan and Phil....

Exactly what I knew would happen!! Good luck to the new owner - he'll do very well out of this car financially, and no doubt have a great ownership experience. Having said that, I would't be surprised if it was bought by another dealer.

When I first saw this thread (the same day the car became available) I recognised it immediately as the one I had very much wanted to buy, back in April, but it wasn't for sale at that time. Back then, having watched his video I had wrongly assumed the owner Craig Carter would probably never ever sell it, otherwise I would have tried to contact him to make a very generous offer. As it turned out, another great example soon came on the market via Dicky - which I bought.

So now when I saw Craig's car come up for sale my first reaction was "OMG he's selling it!" followed by shock at the asking price which is quite a bit lower than I was prepared to pay back in April. My gut feeling was to grab it anyway purely as an additional investment, before it gets snapped up, with a view to reselling next season - but then I just couldn't quite make the maths work.

.

My gut feeling is a dealer seeing the value in it but lets face it there are a lot of private collectors out there with money to spend on gems like this.

He's not a dealer, he's a private buyer who's been looking for one for a while. He said he couldn't fault it so he'd have it.

Great that it was a private buyer. Good things usually come to those who wait long enough! He was the right man for the car - he appreciated that another one this good is unlikely to hit the market for a long time.

Glad it's gone to private buyer rather than a speculative trader. At least some one will get the enjoyment as well as any potential financial investment.
