Good work David. I would be interested to know how it looks against the blue. The bulb has gone in my Chrome clock so currently try to source a replacement - not cheap are they!

Has anyone opened one of the clocks from a 3200 or 4200 as bulb failure is very common; mine has gone I would like to fix it but I really do not want to replace the whole thing...

Surely it must be possible to get the case off with out wrecking the bezel and I'm assuming it is a standard fillament bulb inside? If anyone has a dead one laying about I'd be happy to look at trying an LED retro fit that would last much longer. If successful it could lead to an 'on board' exchange service far cheaper than the OEM replacement....

Has anyone got a dead clock they could send me to play with???

(checked carefully for typo's there...)

I really think this is a possibility to upgrade to LED's even to using three colour and allowing for setting to any colour to suit the car...

Took my working but lightless clock to bits today and traced the fault as far as I could it is to do with the HV chip it is supposed to lift from 1.6v to 94v but its only giving out about 22v so the electo luminescent panel can't fire up...

Got my brother in Taiwan looking at options but I tink I can play with an LED alternative with a difuser to even the lighting accross the panel. Not sure if it is better to go white led's and match the green of the other clocks with the diffuser or go green led's and opaque diffuser???

Be a couple of weeks to get the system in place but should be a doable repair service for members...

I have been so busy at work these last few weeks, I hadn't noticed the mountain of threads and posts to catch up on, you guys have certainly been busy!!

I have settled for the gold clock in my car now, what made me doubt it, was the fact that it looked a bit odd against the chrome rings around the air vents, so I have painted the chrome vents matt-black and it looks so much better.

The gold really stands out and I think it looks fab. Also has a lovely glow when lit up on a night, the gold hatching pattern on the face seems to project out, plus the gold hands pick up the light really well too.

So in all, lovely!

I was thinking about pulling the chrome clock to bits to see how it works, but given that it works, I have thought better of it!!

Regards to all

David

They are very dissapointing to pull apart they are not much more than a £2 watch!!! there is just a more complex PCB sitting over the watch part to run the lights but even that is real crude electronics with cr@p components... Cartier they are not!

Let there be... LIGHT!!!!

Not an alien landing but a grainy photo of the LED conversion on the naked chassis of my clock hanging in the hole in the dashboard... just need to find the right diffusers and I have a green backlight clock!!!

Not a bad bit of detective work even if I do say so myself!

:rofl5::rofl5::rofl5:

This is the modification out of the car....

I will fix in locations with hot glue gun to prevent short citcuits and rubbing etc. then put the clear platform on with a diffuser on it in place of the electroluminescent plate, dial and hands before reassembling in the case and putting back in the car for the morning...

Done....

Bit green and needs a little more diffusing but not bad for a first go!

That's a neat piece of work 2b1. How does the colour / brightness match with the dials?

Total of £7 in bits and an evenings soding about... I'll post up the process when I get a chance. The most difficult bit for me was getting the clock out the first time as mine was set very deep in the dash; there are a couple of little clips to retain it that I ended up manglifying to get it to shift. When I'm happy with it and it proves to be a reliable fix I'll put them back on and refit it properly.

Colour wise I used green super bright 3.0mm LED's two each side in parallel with a resistor so there are four lights. Maplin didn't have a stock of white or blue greens as I would have prefered. I have used two layers of laminator pouch as a diffuser material as it is thin and frosted it helps but I probably need to put more in the bulb areas to eaven it out a bit. Green LED's are a bit too dark a green to be a good match for the switches but are close to the clocks etc.

If I redo it I'll probably use more but smaller LED's maybe ten in two rings (6 & 4) as this would be easier to diffuse. Think blue greens would give best match with a small additional green diffuser layer.

Feed voltage on the lighting circuit on mine was 13.2v (if anyone wants to have a go you need to know this for the LED calculations). Space is tight in the clock as you can see in the middle photo above.

Glad I've cracked it though.
