Don't knock it!
I've just retro fitted a NIC unit with GSM phone, as mine did not have the option selected, the NAV option only, like most.
Straight forward swop, all wiring already in place although for some reason they decided not to plug the loom into the rear wing aerial in the boot.
Once plugged in...wow...I have never had such a strong phone signal at home before, even with the car in the garage under the house!
The rear wing aerial is the real deal, a true combined unit, radio and GSM phone aerial, active too being 12V powered.
These days with bluetooth, we have lost the facility of an external powered active GSM phone aerial like the 'old days'.
The built in GSM phone is a neat set up, even if 12 years old, and all my buttons now work:thumb1:
