Playing Cuba at rugby doesn't necessarily imply "elite"
Very true! (Though this wasn’t the only game of rugby I ever played.)
But what was interesting in that particular game was that their winger had won the 100m final in the Pan-American games that year, beating then world champion Donovan Bailey. Safe to say he was quite sharp (!) so scored three tries in the first half.
And there number 8 had won a boxing medal at the previous Olympics, in the heavy weight division. So when the two packs decided to mix it up towards the end of the game, it all got messy very quickly. Luckily for us the ref blew up to finish the game and we all trooped over the road to a petrol station to buy some celebratory beers. A strange but fun day.
Other random minor national teams I played against on various tours included Barbados, Jamaica, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Hungary and South Korea (Tony Underwood scored the wining try in that game). Anyway, happy times.
