I went to Rome in January, the cheapest flights I could find were with Alitalia for about £160 from memory, each, return.

Just watch out for the cafe scammers they stand outside and grab you as you pass then charge you £12 for a beer. Also when ordering in Rome always see the price list and point to what you want. We got scammed in il president restaurant and got charged £50 for a bottle of house wine.....sorry sir we thought you mention the 'special' house wine.

Capital cities are more or less the same in my experience. High prices , mediocre service and congestion. There are far better places to spend your money.

......try to go by the following..........

1.Avoid anything within a 100 metre radius of said tourist attraction
2. Check where the locals eat
3. If you see a q outside a restaurant made up of locals....join it
4. Do some back ground reading.....plenty out there!

Its like cyprus, we know were to stay and where to eat but the tourist always goes right in the middle of the hustle and bustle and while there they get ripped off, i wont eat at any restaurant in cyprus thats mainly aimed at tourist as i know thier food is shite and expensive, instead i go to where my family go which is always 5min walk from the buzz in a back street but food is sublime and cheap.....

Do your research and staying a little out is no bad thing.....

tripadvisor is my sense check whenever we go somewhere, it's never failed me so far and used it for finding places to stay all over europe plus place to eat whilst there, neither of us drink so that means we can spend extra money on extra good nosh, I LOVE good food with a passion, almost as much as cars.

Am still suspicious of some reports though.....too often the 1/2/3 posters either says a place or service is 5*....or horrific......need to check a more than a few to be mostly sure.....:)

Trip advisor is an excellent site and there is an app also. Ok you have to ignore the odd wild comment but go with the majority and you won't go far wrong.

We had an incedent where the hotel we wanted to book had many reports of food poisoning so we phoned Thompson and their reply was "if you drink for 12 hours in the sun and not drink any water you will get sun stroke, we get this all the time in our all inclusive restaurants"

Never a truer word spoken!
