Changing batteries without resetting radio codes (3200gt)

Hi all,

I need to change the battery on my 3200GT as it's let me down over this winter. Yes, it was undriven for a week, maybe 10 days, but after a jump start and being driven an hour or I thought it would keep its charge. Currently it's a never heard of brand of unknown vintage, going to get a Yuasa YBX5096 :)

The problem is that I don't have the radio codes for this car, it was never handed down, and therefore I am worried about unplugging the battery when I change it over. I am aware of this website (RadioCode.co.uk) but I would also need the tools required to remove the radio to get to the serial number.

So, I was thinking whether I could wire the batteries up as if jump starting it (in parallel) and somehow keep them connected to the car as I change the main connectors over, thus keeping the power on. Obviously trying to avoid smoke and explosions whilst doing it :frusty6::conf1:

Any other bright ideas, please?

This car cost me a bomb last year (two refurb shocks, wishbone, 4x tyres, and two repainted rear arches), hoping for a quieter and cheaper year!

Regards,
Allyp

I`ve got a thing that plugs into *** lighter with a 9v battery connected, specifically designed for this. Got it from Halfords.

When I swapped out my battery on my 3200, the radio (original Becker) didn't need to have the code re-entered. I guess it has an internal memory that retains it for a period of time. Come to think of it, I took the old battery out several times to be charged before I finally gave in to a Bosch replacement, and it never needed the code to be entered. It would have been without a battery for at least 24 hours on a number of occasions.
I wouldn't want to say that you should do the same however in case you aren't as lucky as me - good luck

but those connecting with the cigarette ligther works only when the cigarte ligther is powered permanently and no switching in between.

An other option is to get the code reevaluated by someone. I dont know whether those are reliable but in principle it can be done

I managed to power mine through the cigarette light socket rigged up to a battery when I managed to shut the boot with my only key inside and the battery disconnected or flat (I forget which). Pressed the button and Hey Presto! Not good for the heart though.

I have the Becker code on a bit a paper under the armrest, ten secs and your done..

But the engine ECU takes about 100 miles to relearn every time you switch off!

i would get the code for your audio unit sir. I hate to say it but it will probably have to be disconnected regularly to deal with stupid faults!
