CAR TAX

So this is new (the sort of problems you get if you go away for a month):

1712065416424.png

So I am supposed to have paid my tax by 1 April.

But now I am also very confused, because the renewal notice offers me 5 prices:

6 months: £382.25
12 months: £695.00
Monthly DD: 729.75
6 months by DD: £364.88
12 months by DD: £695.00

But the Web says:

Bandg/km CO212 months6 months
L226-255
£675
£354.38
M255+
£695
£364.88

And the online payment portal says:
6 months by card: £404.25
12 months by card: £735.00

So would I have got a bargain if I had paid my 1 April car tax on 31 March?
Is there really a premium of £40 for paying by credit card?

Nope Direct Debit is the same price.

So apparently I could have paid £695 on Friday or I can pay £735 today.

Is there a 'late fee'???

Meanwhile, the RAC are now prepared to come and look at my battery (sometime in the next 10 hours), having got me to email them the confirmation from DVLA that I paid my VED.

Sheesh!

I suppose they have had a problem with fixing cars and then having to tow them home, when they turn out to be untaxed (and uninsured).

Both the AA and RAC have similar clause, that the car has to be road legal including tax...I also know this by experience.

Turned out they weren't willing to come until 2AM, so I have cancelled and will try to re-start the whole process tomorrow.

Yes you missed out on the 2023 price. Also, RAC are a complete pile of **** now. I called them twice last year for the dailies. It was silly things, but I thought I may as well use them. They cancelled one call after 12 hours and told me to go to a garage. Second time I told them to foxtrot off after 10hours. Well it is cold sir and we are very busy.....

Shove your renewal where the orange van don't shine.

Me too when I needed rescuing a good few years ago in a Sierra that was on my Trade Plates not covered and I had to pay for the recovery.

I’m more shocked that it costs £735 just to be able to put your car on the road. Robbing bastards.
Just another example of price inflation and profiteering really. Captive market and no competition or alternative so easy for govt to just increase taxes and the peasants will pay.

Taxes are increasing but services are reducing. You wouldn't be able to get away with that as a private business or entity. Although that being said competition is reducing so many large private entities are increasing prices the same.

New rates.
Peter's bang on. I paid mine on 31st March effective 1st April and saved £40 compared to doing the same thing one day later. And, because I'm a nice guy, I even posted the top tip on here somewhere. But I expect one of Zep's e-powered AI ChattyBots ate it.

Haven't had RAC or AA for years, just used the breakdown insurance offerred by the Nationwide and they were very good. They picked up the GT when I had a split cooling hose, I told them not to bother with a repairman as it's a split hose under the manifold so i just needed rercovery back home. They agreed and after a one hour wait and I was back home in 45 mins on the low loader. The driver gave tips and advice of a few coolant pipe companies, even some numbers too. Second time was after a puncture in the Suzuki, the lease company were terrible so i used my own breakdown via the bank again and I was recovered home within the hour again.

I seriously do not understand why people use the AA or RAC, when it's practically 'free' with a £13 Nationwide FlexPlus or £10 Club Lloyds Account. You also get mobile and travel insurance too. The Lloyds one give a discount if you put in more than £4k (so £8pm) and interest too. What's not to like...

Not exactly profiteering. As a country we are in huge debt, where successive governments have made losses, not profits.
It’s a merry-go-round. Nurses, doctors, train drivers (etc) strike until they get pay rises, so the Govn has to increase the take from tax to pay for them. Of course, it’s all completely unsustainable and a broken system, but it is the system we have.
Profiteering is what energy companies have been doing since the start of the Ukraine war. They have been making larger profits and have played a huge part in increasing inflation and causing the cost of living crises. It’s these companies that need to be better controlled and/or further taxed.
Anyway, I’m sure Sir KS has a master plan to solve it all when he becomes PM later in the year... Ha!

We have the AA here and to be fair they are pretty good, fast to respond and will try everything to get you going. When I split a heater hose on the Alfa they took me to the nearest accessory shop and went and searched though what they had to find some hoses they could make up to get me home, old style mechanic format. However recovery works differently, they take you to their nearest depot arrange transport for you to you destination, public transport, taxi or them if it close and then recover your to your preferred address with 24 hours.

Actually works quite well they seem incentivised to reduce the use of a tow truck.

I think Ewan and Rockitts are having a different sort of breakdown...
