I'm going to experiment on the Pinin first!
However what I have bought, with pads and polish, it is pretty impossible to cock it up by all accounts.
I've only slight swirls on both the Maser and BMW, as always been careful with washing, but they do show up under the florescent garage lighting which annoy me!
I need to investigate how to deal with my Stag paint that really could do with correction, after nearly 30 years since being painted.
That is 2 pack solid, no clearcoat.

Just be aware that the machine has the ability to mess your paint up, it is down to the operator to prevent it!

Don't lean on it, don't over do it, liberal paste of the correct cut, keep it wet at all times, check frequently and if you see primer you have gone WAY TOO FAR!

In all seriousness though, do use masking tape to protect badges and lenses etc. practice on the wife's car as it will get you brownie points and wont upset you when you **** it up!

Being into Self-flagellation , I much prefer to polish manually over a machine, you have far more control and get fit doing it. I tend to use Farclea G3 and 3M Fineness as they are more than adequate to deal with stuff you can do yourself. Oh yes, well worth claying first to remove contaminates.

Practice on the neighbours motors first...

The dual action makes it much less likely to burn through the clear coat, Don't polish in the sunshine, keep an eye on the surface temp. There are loads of videos on youtube on how to do it. Each car's paint is different, so a pad that works well on one, may not on another.

I found it very therapeutic, but it is hard graft.

Make sure you keep the pads clear from used polish between series, I found I needed about 3 of the same type if going at it for a while. Oh and use panel wipe to clean between cuts.

Don't do it Mike, I've ruined many a nice paint job with those things trying for that little bit of extra shine!

I had never done anything like this before. However after the one day that Darren so kindly put on for 4 of us showing as many do and don'ts I took the plunge and bought a DA kit last year.

I've done 5 cars with it now and got really good results with the SL especially. I was only really attempting to half detail if you like so not trying to get heavier marks or scratches out just lighter stuff.

Really please with the results and really helps to make a car look it's best come sale time. Also a good idea for any car to get it in a nice place to hen be able to keep it that way raiser.

Cars I have done have been £5k-£15k so not silly high value cars. Will be doing the facelift 4200 I'll be selling next week as well.

I'm inspired and impressed by those results, but I would never trust myself with such an instrument of torture. I'm far too heavy-handed and I'd bugger it up. I'd rather pay a pro to do the work and I can keep things sweet with careful washing.

I got this one after a bit of research

Comes with a nice bag with machine polisher, a cutting disc with cutting correction compound, then a polishing disc and compound and polishing compound and half a dozen soft microfibre cloths.

Nice and easy to use for a beginner I would suggest and seemed to me a decent kit for not silly money to kick off with. Plenty enough to make a difference for me for the moment. Much quicker and easier than doing by hand on the big flat panels.

I have always cleaned and then clay mitted first to rid of most surface contaminants first. Get some detailing spray as well to keep the surface wet and lubricated. The Meguirs stuff was good in red bottle as nice fine spray. I got some other recommended blue stuff can't remember name and is much thicker in viscosity.

Do it, its not that difficult but here are some pointers:

  • Compound, compound, compound! I bought 3M Fast cut (green) 3M Fine cut (yellow) and 3M Ultrafina (blue). The blue is probably what you want to start with if your only de swirling
  • Head, only buy the 3M heads and only use one per compound
  • Thoroughly clean and clay the car
  • Mask up! The stuff goes everywhere and when it dries is a fecker to get off and finds its way into all the shuts and cavities.
  • Wet the mop head in a bucket of water and spin off the excess while still in the bucket/out of the water
  • select the first area to be done (2sqft)
  • Apply 4 50p size dots to the mop head
  • Place face down and smear over the area to be cut
  • Turn on the mop and work in vertical and horizontal bands, overlapping each time
  • The compound is self diminishing so it will eventually dissapear
  • Turn the mop off and then lift off the panel and repeat till desired affect.
Always start and stop the mop on the panel.

Revel in the fact that you are now a detailing god!

Thanks for the comments.
Cleanyourcar.co.uk are local to me so just called in.
The das-6 Pro plus V2 was £160 plus chemical guys green pads and 1-step scholl S20 black compound.
This will get me started, basically following this guy that is UK and down to earth regarding detailing.

John is good. Used a lot of his vids to teach me what to do.
