Camera install

Fitted a front and rear camera today into the QP, routing the cables behind the headliner to join them together. The master camera at the front records both front facing and rear facing video and audio into separate files on a microSD card. I've had these in all the cars for a while, but didn't have the rear camera in the Maserati before today. The power feed is taken from the 12V switched feed at the rear of the centre console, allowing the cameras to automatically start when the engine is fired up, and shut down 15s after the ignition is turned off.

Total cost of this setup is a mighty £35, including the 16Gb microSD card. It takes many, many hours of recording to fill the card, and then it will automatically overwrite the oldest files.

These units can also be set to start recording when motion is detected, although I don't use them in that mode for this install.

When driving, I can't see the front camera as it falls neatly behind the sunvisor; the rear camera is a tiny rectangle right at the top centre of the rear screen. Only the bottom half of the unit is visible, as the headlining hides it.

Good investment but be very wary about things if you are involved in an accident if you know what I mean. It would be a shame to have to quickly remove the SD card so as not to implicate yourself!

That's part of the reason for having the cameras - assuming it's not my fault, then the evidence is very handy. In the event an accident should be my fault, I'll be sure to ensure the camera evidence isn't available!

Nice install, Drew

Nice install Drew.

One thought, is there any way you can get it to record when the car is off, saving a minute either side of any "impact" that is detected if you get me?

Yes, it does that - the camera has an internal battery, and a shock sensor. It will wake-up and record on impact, BUT, to record before the impact it would have to be in motion detect mode. Considering the fragile state of Maserati batteries, I'm loathe to do that. The system works fine on the other cars though; Susie's S3 is set up like that.

I could make a camera system with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi to do exactly what you want though. Not for £35 though :)

Impressed Drew, that sounds the business.

Have a look at it at Silverstone this weekend - they are dirt cheap on the bay of e.
