Dreaded shi*e hand brake struck this evening.

Handbrake on, car on a gentle slope, fails and rolls backwards into wall. Near side rear corner a bit messed up. Paint flaked, deformed and scraped. Taking my friends son & his mates to their Prom on Thursday night - just won't feel right.

Also heading off to Goodwood Friday and have a space in the Supercar car parking. Will be embarrassed by the damage. Doh!

Never mind the cost of the repair!!!!!

Will always keep in gear from this moment on.

I feel your pain mate. Don't trust the bloody thing. I always leave it in gear these days, even if it's only to make it harder to steal. I hope it gets well soon.

Ouch. Did that once, but not on a maser...left a pug 306 size dent in a neighbour's house. Always park in gear & with wheels turned on hills now.

Poor maser!

Really sorry to hear that mate, always leave them in gear, you never know. I once had a Jag roll down a hill, luckily I saw it happen and managed to unlock it and jump in just in time, never do that again..!!

The 145 and Sprint had some issues, but normally the handbrake siezing on due to water ingress and corrosion / freezing.

Never had any other issues myself.

Handbrake issues! a common thread these days - I left a handbrake off once on a Foden Recovery Vehicle, the vibration rattled the gear shift into first - and off went 20 odd tons on its own!, luckily it only took out a fence before it stopped and the built in crane was needed to hoist it off the brick wall it demolished.
That took some explaining.

Good end to the story. Been working on a solution to stop the ba***rds cloning keys and nicking cars via OBD port. Inventor of product (Databloc) owns a body shop and has offered to fix FOC.

Have 15% of business for doing 18months of work on branding/marketing/channel. No cash yet but a fixed Maserati :) Result!

Alfa GTV (proper ones with RWD) only have a sun roof so you can yank the handbrake vertical to give some semblance of grip - even then they are useless on a hill. Modern Alfas after 1990 have rubber seals on the end of the cables which break up and let water in, which as soon as it gets cold freezes solid and locks. Alfasuds & early sprints had handbrakes on the front inboard discs - useless.

Easy rule never use handbrakes on Alfas.

It will be the lever mechanism has seized, it gets a lot of junk from the road and also corrodes so the brake feels like its tight but you are just pulling on the seized mechanism and not actually applying the brake. Make sure the lever mechanism is at least cleaned up and moving freely before you replace any of the brakes.

Good advice -my failed handbrake turned out to be a seized cable on one side (plus a missing pin on the actuator inside the disc - which when replaced made no difference at all)
New cable c£40 just waiting for it to be delivered.
The cable is a real pain to release from the back of the hub carrier but patience (2lb lump hammer) and a block of wood soon dislodged it
