The problem with overtaking on the left is That there are little chances before the straight are on the right as the natural track line/apex results in approach on the left and exit onto the left!

I took a Mustang on the right just before the chicane as it felt more natural and he was hindering progress.

Definitely the best year yet for track debris. My worst gravel rash was from last year when they had swept the track more than ever before. This year I noticed very little, although a massive rock was thrown up on the straight from a car I was bearing down on.....

Those Smart cars are a real nuisance. :D

It's probably a good job that they will not be organising this event next year, as the waiver forms this year were considerably more invasive and onerous than previous years, and the lack of secure processing of these has opened up ASDA to astonishing risk of prosecution for many years to come.

I have here samples of the waiver forms, most of which Susie realised were asking for too much info, and managed to prevent punters fully completing and therefore limiting the exposure to ASDA as a corporation, but also to us as a club and private individuals. However, some are fully completed as ASDA clearly intended. What's wrong with that, you may ask? Well.... since such huge store was placed on having CRB/DBS checked people in the cars to guard against the ludicrous perceived risk of a driver at 100mph+ causing moral harm to a minor in a 1 minute lap, they might have thought about what to do with the reams of PII recorded on the forms by all the clubs. When ASDA representatives collected the money periodically through the day, they specifically refused to collect the completed waivers, stating that they were 'ours to keep'.

So - we have the situation where we and the other clubs have reams of personal data on hundreds of children (and adults), including names, addresses, postcodes, date of birth, phone numbers, signatures; all positive gold to the paedophiles the H&S fools at ASDA were looking to keep out.

At least we still have them, and I can deal with them appropriately. What did the other clubs do with them? Bin them at the circuit? Take them away to bin at home? Who actually has them now.... They must be securely disposed of, not dumped in a public bin, but whilst we have a stack of them here, we can't influence the other 90% of the forms in existence from the other gates.

It's a serious breach of data protection, contains masses of data likely to put hundreds of children at risk, (and adults of identity theft), and sufficient to have proper conversations with the ASDA legal department. I will do that via my contacts at the ICO next week.

For the record, I have the sheets in a safe, SportsMaserati and members at the event are not at risk. I will be handing them directly to the ICO in due course for them to decide what action to take.

You may take from this that my strongly held view is that when a clot treads on a charity day with heavy boots in a half-hearted style at the last moment, causing nothing but grief, they need to stand up and take responsibility for their frankly stupid and unnecessary intervention.
Thanks for the message earlier Drew. One of my drivers sent me lots of docco on the checks and I tried to get Asda to reverse their decision before the day but they would not. I was going to say that I took all of my forms to the portacabin when I left but but I have found some more today in my "asda" box. I will put them in my safe and try and find a shredder. I will pass your info onto the chaps and ladies of my club.

Was great to spend some time with some of you Friday night in the bar. My head was not very good Saturday morning.

Sorry to see your clutch failed Mark. We certainly heard you before that. That DB output is mental. The GTR failed with transmission problems. He tried some resets with a laptop and gave up.

The track was loads better but two of our cars will need their windscreens replacing now.

Driving standards do still seem to be an issue. I am going to try and summarise the briefing we have in the morning so I can email it before the event. It is too rushed on the day. I will be getting in-car footage from the day and will probably see the events mentioned on here. We do have a new driver who is very fast, very experienced but maybe a bit over exuberant. I did send him out with one our best drivers for a sighting lap to try and make sure he understood it is a bit of fun. I am happy to discuss with Andy or Drew anything that took place on the day and improve things for next year. He did also try to apologise to the drivers he upset which is something.

I did see a lot of cars overtaking on the right and the chap in the blue jacket was telling a lot off. One of our drivers was blocked by (IIRC) a VX220 hogging the white line on the left so overtook on the right. What would you do? Perhaps this needs picking up in the briefing next year?

Overall a great event again and a pleasure to be next to your club.

Thanks Dave; posts like this can only help to smooth the relations between disparate car clubs. There will always be differences between the performance of dissimilar cars but events like this help to heal the differences between different drivers. Thanks again.

Appreciate you taking the time to post again Dave - I've less of a problem with overtaking on the right particularly on the main straight provided the car isn't there by the time the corner arrives. Before the chicane is a lot trickier. Some of our guys dived for a corner inside me when I was held up by a slower car - they aren't Hamilton, it's not a race, and although I get a lot of track time and won't turn into a car that's offline, there are plenty of inexperienced drivers on the circuit who perhaps aren't quite as aware. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter if you get a few spoiled laps - just chill, back off, be a bigger man, save it for next time and don't drive like a selfish ****. It's just for fun to entertain the punters...

Another Maserati was on track btw, not from this club. White GT with a rear wing. His driving standards were appalling, sufficiently poor for me to notify the track chief who acted appropriately. The organisers will step in and educate if we give them the info.

I haven't driven for a few years as I need to concentrate on the running rather than my driving but when I did drive, if I got a lap that was held up by another car, I continued through the pits and did an extra lap. Simples.

Interesting about the white maserati. Had a few complaints from my drivers about that one. Did think it was one of yours but did not mention it. Nice to know it was not one of yours!

He should have been kicked off for sticking that "thing" on the boot!

The track chief possibly didnt take in the full details of what you said to him drew. He came down to the gate when Andy and yourself were out and about and asked who was running our gate and spoke to Chris Catman about the white Maserati. Chris stopped him and pointed out it was not ours but belonged to a group 2 or 3 gates up from us.

Overall i think with the exception of one or two drivers that i saw being less than polite on the track then it was all good. Im not the quickest driver out there but i gave people space to pass on my left if i knew they were quicker than me. I only had one incident of somebody taking space that wasnt there and forcing me offline and one incident of somebody overtaking on the right which wasnt on the straight and lets just say their timing was not great as they pulled in front of me and then hit the brakes.

It seems a few cars over cooked it and went off roading from what some of the passengers were saying.

The first session in the morning and the first session after lunch get hectic on track as everybody is out. The last 30 minutes before the track closes is probably the best as there are fewer people left on track. Its also the time we get to take some of the cadets and helpers out who have worked hard all day to make it such a great event.

I had few issues with other drivers. They may have had issues with me. I tried to make sure I was out of the way, but sometimes, that left me on the left *indicating left* so that others knew that I was expecting them to pass on the right.

Couple of times at the end of the straight, there were cars to my right, but they always tucked in behind.

Virtually no grit at Brunty this year. I've had more stones ping off my helmet at Silverstone or Donington than hit the car yesterday; they had made a very significant improvement on clearing the track of debris.

Agree Drew,,,,seemed well swept this year but I have never really thought it was a bad as everyone has said .... If you get close to the car in front on the back straight you will pay the price but keep clear and it shouldn't be an issue....Just need to watch you mirrors for the faster cars and give them plenty of room...........but understand why everyone the track tap for their pride and joy.......Dan came back from a ride in the Atom with a bit of it in his had that had flow off on a car and into his lap......

As others have said, thanks for posting, Dave. Personally I hated it when I started with a GTR up my chuff. I just got in the way. Generally the smarter ones just hung back for 30 second after I'd gone and then caught up by the chicane.

I must confess to one bit of right-hand overtaking, but that was Chris and he told me to, so I felt ok about it.

Hehe, I had a chap come for a lap in our Maserati after he'd been in with that white GT on the other gate. He said the guy couldn't drive it at all and was very very thankful for a proper experience in a Maser... and that's with me, one of our slowest.
As my first time on track, it was rather disconcerting (being polite) when I was cut up on the exit line from the chicane and actually had to swerve out of the way of a GTR that wasn't giving me room - way before the straight. Other than that, everything was fine and people were good around me while I was still a bit slow. I tried to give them room as well.
Hopefully we can just all mention things to our various clubs to help people realise how full the track will be, and the mix of experience out there. After all, we all appreciate each others' cars even if they're not our own choice, and we're all super-chuffed that everyone out there has given their day and pride-and-joy to make a lot of people very happy!

Oh, and then there was the RangeRooney at the end of the day who came up to me and Newton at the end of the day wanting to go on track, and offering to all give money to the charity to do it. Let's just say I wouldn't have trusted them to drive the pits safely!

I might have relayed this story to a few of you already but here goes for all of you. The Mrs and I decided to drive one of the ASDA HGV's and as the Mrs was joining the periphery of the track down by the bottom right hand corner we heard an almighty screech of tyres (so much so that I thought someone decided to try a nice 80 mph drift) this panicked the wife and she jumped on the anchors of the truck, thankfully for the driver of the red TVR she did and he came past us spinning off the track nearly brushing the front bumper, had she not acted I am confident that he would have gone under the truck.

For me this event is an accident waiting to happen if we a) continue to have some very inexperienced drivers on the track with no etiquette or clue about how to brake, turn in and exit a corner. It's not exactly a demanding track and god knows how they would cope with something like Castle Combe or Thruxton! and b) The trucks and trikes continue to use the same track as us as we witnessed first hand having a large object to hit rather than a clear run off is just exacerbating the issue. Also one thing which dawned on me as I sat in the queue to join the track was how can we be sure that the trucks which come up on the outside won't veer into our lane taking out 5 or 6 cars?

Wow. That's appalling Phil... That area shouldn't have any fast cars, it's well inside the final brake board so no excuse for it. To some extent the marshals should be able to deal with such things, but on talking to Chris the Organiser after the track closed, he was very pleased there had only been one car spin off all day. He was suitably crestfallen when I told him I had in-car video of 3 in the last half-hour alone, complete with yellow flags, so the marshals knew about them.

I'm still amazed we are allowed to run this event without everyone wearing helmets. Where else can you drive at unlimited speed on a track without helmets being compulsory?
