They are wooden! From my biking days I've always liked an initial 'bite' when pulling on the brakes. ( I could always do a better stoppie than a wheelie!) OEM does not have it and you need to gently push the brake pedal to achieve an adequate amount of initial braking power. The above advice is perfectly sound to use Mintex etc.
If your brakes are squealing then it's either down to a lack of copperslip on the BACK or they are starting to crumble. I had a set in mine that just fell apart when I pulled them out to inspect them. OEM are safe but there's better and safer out there !
