Borrowed Ghibli

Just borrowed a Petrol Ghibli from Lovetts whilst the GT is being fettled...

Some quick thoughts..

It's only the basic Petrol - but plenty quick enough for most... and a potential licence loser... found myself cruising far faster on the M4 than I would in the GT. One of those cars that is always going faster than it feels..

Noise... with the sport button pressed - it's still only really a treat for people outside of the car.. even with the windows down.

Seats v comfy esp the pillow soft head restraint.

Not mucked about with any gadgets .. not my thing anyway..

Finish all as you would expect. - still don't like the wood ... but at least there's not much of it..

Ride a bit lumpy on poor roads - 20" wheels on it don't help that.. - but they do look good...

Does seem to shrink when your pressing on on twisty bits... rather surprised by that - and quite like it..despite the reviews I think the Chassis and handling are pretty good... could be more exposed with the S ... but good enough IMHO...

Brakes - grabby - very...

rear legroom a bit limited for my 6' sons..

Wife likes the look of it - and found it easy to drive and not as intimidating as the GT...

Sort of lacks the sense of occasion of other Maserati... but not had it long enough to find out..

I reckon - at the price point - a nearly new one of these (rather than the diesel or the S) wouldn't be a bad buy at all..

Outrun would absolutely agree! I have been a passenger in his petrol Ghibli and it was a lovely place to be.

Having had mine for almost 2 weeks I'm mostly in agreement with your review above. I went for the diesel; it now has more power than the standard petrol and a slug more torque so gets down the road well, whilst delivering an incredible MPG for a Maserati. No wood for me, mine has carbon fibre trim. The standard dark wood actually looks very nice, but I'm not keen on the 'upgrade' shiny lighter wood. I think you may feel it lacks a sense of occasion because it's quiet and feels more sophisticated/grown up than other Maserati models - not hard compared to my GS! It still feels to me like a very special place to be and delivers a different experience to my other cars, so is doing the job intended very well.

Hi there:

you are the guys to help me.
I am desperate to get a car soon.
I never thought of a maserati before (only dreamed of it) but some of the deals on the Ghibli are too good to be true...
I took out the S. Was fun and very luxurious - but I am moving from a compromise car of a 330D and don't want to make the same mistake again.

I have a 16 month old and need a daily driver - but desperately want a sense of occasion.

Will the petrol ghibli do the job - or do I need a GT....or will the GT kill me on petrol costs, 2 doors and servicing etc...

help MUCH appreciated.

Hi Iain, if you want a sense of occasion nothing does that like a GTS but you are correct in you assumption of the fuel costs. I have had several large engined V8's and nothing comes close to emptying its tank like a GTS. Have a look at a 4.2 maybe and a GibD then make your decision.

A 4.7 GTS older QP is another you might want to drive too.

Thanks a lot for your advice.
the Ghibli Diesel was a nice car but it seems odd to me to have a maserati and go for the diesel. I don't like the idea of a red line at 4,500 and speaker systems to enhance the exhaust sound.
I think my budget will only stretch to an 08/09 GT 4.2 - do you think that might be a good option? I have seen one I really like with a nice private plate for circa 34k - 48,000 2009. Does this sound good to you?

Do you have a Grandsport? That was another option as a second car... but I am not so technically savvy, and no really good maserati dealership near (Swansea) so they scare me a little - although they look awesome

A nice 4.2 GT is a perfectly lovely car... and personally I found the mpg not too bad at all when driven conservatively .... but not the sort of thing for a supermarket run... Ghibli a more capable all rounder - and specced nicely - should feel like an occasion..

Personally I'd leave a diesel alone - I've a feeling they are going to get taxed to death soon - and I wouldn't buy a Maserati with a Chrysler engine...

Petrol one felt fine to me... may not have the punch of your beemer ... but all the fun at the top of the reve range ... and at least it's got one ..

Hear, hear! That's ultimately why I plumped for a petrol one. Much more of a Maserati power delivery and noise plus it's averaging 26.5mpg which is fine for me. Yes, the diesel would do more but what about the planet man....

I'm very fond of mine. I think there will be many owners on here over the next couple of years as the depreciation brings them into more affordable range for more buyers.

Hope you are right outrun, Ghibli is a fine car and more and more people are finding that out.

I am astonished at how I have grown to like these.
From not being bothered when I first saw pictures to having seen some in the flesh and now seriously liking them.
A bit understated which I like and I bet it is a comfortable place to be.

I have already deleted it but the Graypaul e-mail for their car of the week was a Ghibli Diesel and it was newer, much less miles and only £1k more IIRC.

I like the Ghibli especially the Petrol version. Been in Outruns a few times and driven it hard! :) It pulls well on the grass!

I am looking at a 4.7GTS MC Shift next but I feel that they are quite a rare car compared to the Auto's both 4.7 and 4.2 I feel that I am somewhat limiting myself in the market making it harder to buy one.

Is there really 10k difference in car between the nice Targio Floria car posted recently and say a £45K MC shift? Which will depreciate more?

That was just currently the cheapest on autotrader!

There were plenty of GTS MC Shifts sold, it was just when the GT Sport came out in late 2012 that MC gearbox sales really fell off.

There should be plenty of MC-S available but it's if you have very specific spec requirements, where you might have to wait. I ended up compromising a little when I bought mine but I pretty much got what I wanted after only a few weeks of actively looking.
