Bonnet Catch!

Help required gents, has anyone had repeated trouble with their bonnet catch, mine has been playing up of late to such an extent that even on our fine potholed roads it has been popping open!
Tonight whilst lubricating the cables that open the catches I noticed that one of the two catch springs appeared to be out of alignment with the aperture, ie the curved section of the bonnet hooking spring (part No16 in the attached) was not centralised, (hope that bits clear) it was too far back.
When I made an attempt at pushing the bonnet hooking spring forwards to where it should be by only 1cm or so it has become detached and is now free of the bracket (part No17 in the attached), I took off the grill but its not accessible from there, hard to see how you can get to it from the engine bay, bit of a nightmare situation really for what I though would be a 5 minute job!
Has anyone else had anything like this? and if so is it accessible via the wheel arch and headlight aperture or am I looking at a bumper off job? Does anyone have any photos of the bracket in question? Looking forwards to any answers on this one!

Aren't those just the safety catch? I'd have thought 18 was the main catch?

C

Item 18 is just the nut that holds the bracket which in turn holds the latching spring, the two plunging pins on the Bonnet Lock (item No2) engage with the springs at either side of the bonnet when closed.
Item No 5 is the safety latch.

That was a pain, I’ve sorted out the part that became detached will take some photos later to record the access and location, bonnet closes much more positively now!

Hi Miket, I know exactly what you mean, I noticed a stiffening of the bonnet lever on my car today. After removing the engine bay plastic cover with the twist off tabs, peer into the cavity and you can see in and through to the pull cables (see pics). I then simply inverted a WD40 can and directed the red tubed attachment for the spray to that mechanism/cables and hey presto the lever becomes light actioned again as the latches on the cable mount free themselves up. Just spray and gently work the lever in there, you will see and reach the mechanism and cables with your fingers and can work it there too. So no need to have wheels, front grills off or arch liners off unless you’re replacing broken cables.....

Also worth applying some grease to where the bonnet plunging pins rest (at the front of the engine bay see picture 1) when the bonnet is in closed/lowered position. In picture 2 (the closest cable) with the grey coloured round rubber grommet, that grommet should be on the end of the cable i.e. on the other side of the cable latch holder. That closest cable is the emergency/ spare cable pull which in turn is situated just above the other primary cabin bonnet pull. So if you get someone to gently pull and hold the primary lever in the footwell, it will allow you momentarily reposition that rubber grommet. Hope you sort it. I’m going to do these lubrications periodically..... PS sorry I was late to this party :D5623856239

Not sure if you are aware of this, if you look above the cabin pull lever there is another one just in case one snaps.

They obviously new the bonnet would be open and closed a lot :)

I did manage to replace my inner cable completely, I purchased a length of cable and utilised some crimp ferrules and made my own part, it works perfectly and is very light to use now.
When I removed the old inner cable it had become badly frayed at the lever end which was causing the action to be very heavy and the lever wouldn’t return automatically, but now all is well again!
