I am looking to buy a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure motorbike (second hand) and was wondering if anyone has any contacts who could point me towards a good deal? I have looked at autotrader.co.uk but as I'm not very knowledgable about what to look out for, I need advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :auto178:

I know they are very popular, but I never got the point of 'adventure bikes'. They aren't really an off-road bike because they generally have road tyres and are top heavy, and they aren't really a good road bike because they are big, bulky and have very soft suspension for off road use. When you do inevitably 'drop' it, make sure you don't get your leg caught under the cylinder nearest the ground as you can do a lot of damage to both. Too compromised for either role, IMO. I suppose they are a bit like Chelsea tractors, rarely used off road but are 'the thing' to have. Anyhoo, good luck with your search.

Thanks BennyD,

I have ridden the 1200 off road numerous times on chunky tyres and expect to do so with the new bike. But I also want it as a tourer on road tyres. The lovely thing with this bike is that it's not top heavy, has a low centre of gravity and is easier to pick up than the 650 (which is top heavy). Touring on this bike is like sitting in an armchair, very comfortable.

Cheers.

Great bikes (Ive had 2) but they are no sports bike. If you want a bike thats comfy for day long riding, then it will tick that box. However.....expensive, not as well made as some of the competition, a little boring, and quite common.
Have you considered a Ducati Multistrada, or Aprilia Caponord?

Whilst reading a review on the Ducati, I came across this........
"As well as the MTS1200 S Touring we tried, for 2013 there’s a base MTS1200 without Skyhook but with the other mode changes, the sportier Pikes Peak at £17,250 and the Granturismo, which has larger panniers and screen, which will cost about £16,300."
I can have a GranTurismo motorbike? I'm off to see Ducati tomorrow!!!!! Hahaha.

The Ducati Multistrudel is a great all round bike.
Spoke to a mate at the weekend who has just bought a Hyperstrada and is blown away with it. He is half Italian and plans runs to Italy etc over the year and reckons it has a lower seat height than the Multi but all day comfy.

Just to throw another one into the bag, Triumph Tiger?
I've just sold my R1200GS as I didn't ride it after returning from a Belgium,France and Spain tour. I just seemed to lose my mojo for some reason but I'm sure I'll buy another one in the future. I'm 5'9" and I found the std R1200GS a little heavy when dropped and it was slightly too high for me and I had the seat on it's lowest setting so if your not over 6' I'd try sitting on an Adventure as they are slightly taller than the std GS. Good look

I've got an 1150GS Adventure (94k miles) which is altogether more agricultural than the 1200 but it absolutely rocks! There's a reason they're so popular and it's not just the Ewan and Charlie thing (though that certainly had a massive impact on sales). They're actually very very easy to ride, make some proper progress and they're comfortable with it. It's been off road a few times too but that's not why I bought it. I haven't tried the Ducatis but I've been down the KTM road (950 SMR and Superduke R) amongst others and they've been and gone whilst the GS has never been close to going up for sale. To try to help with Blondie's original question though, have you taken a look at http://www.ukgser.com/?

I have contacts at Harley and Ducati dealers but not BMW. Happy to intro anyone looking at those brands.

Blondie, I can't imagine my wife even knows that BMW make bikes so hat's off to you. I may have married the wrong person. :)
