104084104085104086104087Folks

picked up this 2012 316d runaround yesterday to replace my Audi. Over the moon with it cracking car for my daily.

I use to be a BMW expert having owned 3 in a row including my E92 M3 which I had for 5 years but my knowledge is fading.

Anyway the query is is there a way to get the media on I drive to recognise my iPhone 12 music lists on the idrive?

I plugged it into the usb and it charges but nothing else. Do I have any options here for seeing songs on idrive from my phone or is it mp3 on a stick situation?

I have an F11 BMW and recently had an MMI box installed which gives full CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as screen mirroring and so on. Forget the factory stuff, it's out of date now. Could not recommend the upgrade more.

This sort of box, although the guy that did it didn't tell me the brand he used, it's the same type of functions as this one.

You need to pair it with Bluetooth. Telephone menu and add new Bluetooth device.

This.
If connect via Bluetooth, for both calls and multimedia, the display will show what song is playing and you should be able to skip tracks etc via the iCrash controller.

Thanks folks.
So regards Bluetooth I am connected and using hands free calls but think my idrive is too old for streaming music as well. Internet search seems to suggest version 7 or later so mine is obviously before that? Edit. Just tried again on the usb it’s saying not supported

And I did try looking for it in usb but wasn’t showing. The aux will just be the 3.5mm jack plug won’t it.

Outrun I’ll get a look at that thanks. Wasn’t sure if these tune to air things work with original idrive but regardless I’ll check that option out thanks

I’m my 2013 M3 the “aux” would play from usb or the jack I think but hazy it was a while ago.

Did the phone show up in the multimedia menu?

This may sound daft but you know that if you push the office knob to the left it takes you back one window in the menu rather than the back button that takes you to the menu’s menu.

Haha, yeah I’m all good on the idrive controls gents.

so as said I plug it into usb and as per that photo earlier it says next to the usb icon ‘not supported’ so I assume it’s not seeing my phone via usb?

guessinf my version of idrive doesn’t do that then?

I can’t even remember what I use to do in my e93 m3. I think I had an old school iPod which it read ok. I think

I had a F32 for around 4yrs. The only way I could get around it was to create a playlist on YouTube. Then I played it though the Media icon via Bluetooth.....I think that's how I did it !!!!

Took me 3 weeks when I got mine to work out you could push it sideways! I’m sure mine worked in the M3, have iPhones changed?? Maybe I just pressed play on the phone. I really don’t know as I put a load of CDs on a USB and stuck that in after a while. Have you got a USB with some music on to try?

Is there no “external device” in the multimedia menu when you’re connected by Bluetooth?

What sort of cable are you using? I had a problem on mine where I had a charge only cable and it didn’t work. Also, try restarting your phone.

So I’ve just plugged a single usb cable, actually just an aftermarket one. You’ve got me thinking now so I need to try one of these Y cables?

Although from my searches online tonight I don’t think mine is compatible but might get hold of a Y cable to try.
I have 2 Maserati ones from when I first got my GT 7 years ago but never managed to get it working. Not sure if they are the same as the BMW ones.

Nothing at all, in the multimedia menu it’s just as per that pic further up. I’ll have to try a usb stick, I suspect that will work and that’s it’s the complications of the iPhone rather than just reading form a memory

I mean they don’t like some cables. If you have a charge only cable it won’t see it. Also you should have a USB in the glovebox, try that one. Also hold down the volume button for 30 seconds, that should reboot the NBT.

Dunno lol. I assume there’s no other ports anywhere just the ones in the centre console? I’ve not seen anything in glove box or anything. I clicked on that aux and I think all that came up was an aux volume slider bar.

Will check that out thanks. When you say good down the volume button you mean on the car and do you mean the actual ‘head unit’ on / off / volume dial button?
