I honestly don't get the staggering difference in price, between such as a 2006 / 2007 4200 and the same year Gransport with the same engine and basically the same mechanical set-up. The cars are so close in specs I just don't get it, anybody any ideas..??

You are right Robert, the price difference is staggering.
My old Lotus Elise was a series one 111s, as opposed to the standard 111, and as a rule of thumb was worth 10% more. The 10% got you bodywork mods (a bit like the GS, rear spoiler, different grill, different wheels etc), more sporty interior (bit like the GS again, carbon fibre pattern dash inserts, different seats, bit more alloy tat etc), but unlike the GS you got 20% more power, better brakes, and a short ratio gearbox.
So in comparison, the GS offers very little for your extra, what 50%?
At the end of the day, if the GS is outside your budget, you don't get a much lesser a car for the substantial price saving :)

I'd still rather have my GS. I prefer the wheels, body kit, seats, carbon bits, no outdated info/sat nab system etc.

The Gransport was 10K more new (67K without extras), so irrespective of any performance differences it will always be a bit dearer. Also, GranSports are rarer. Supply and demand...

Yes GranSports are rarer, but not that much.
Taking the Elise as an example again, the higher performance 111s variant presently accounts for 25% of those for sale on Pistonheads.
The GranSport accounts for 40% of 4200/GS for sale on Pistonheads.
I'm not knocking the GranSport, just illustrating that the market value for the GS is so much higher than the 4200, when in theory it should be not so much higher than it is!

I have to agree Mike. MAF, I am not saying I don't like the GS, it's a lovely car. My 2007 4200 is very close to a GS technically, different interior and trim, but the shell and everything else is more or less the same. I just don't get why I would need to pay another £15-20K for a GS of the same year and mechanical spec', it just does not make sense financially. I could in theory buy another 4200 and have two for the price of one..??

Would probably say that a face lift 4200 is just as rare........Early 4200's def not but not many face lifts sold over the last years....

And 4200 can at least negotiate our pot holed roads.

I agree...do what Loz and I did and up grade the bumpers and grill on a face lift and your almost there...you only have te change the bottom lip for the front bumper as they are interchangeable with a small modification.Surf boards are rare second hand but can be bought from Maserati

There is no science to the price difference between a 4200 and GS. Obviously car enthusiasts desire the many subtle differences/improvements a GS has and will pay a big premium for it. I know I do and did. Look at the spread of prices over say the BMW M3 e46 M3 vs. M3 CS vs. M3 CSL an another example. These cars are bought for fun, for their looks and how they make you feel. Hard to apply a price formula to that!

I'd like to know the numbers on 4200/GSs.....my best guess is theres about double the 42s than there are GSs.

As above, people want what they want. If the GS is seen as the latest and greatest itteration, as it is by many*, then this and the fact they are rarer will have an impact on price.

*while I love my GS to bits, if I had my time again, I'd certainly have a long hard look at a very late 42, possibly even a manual. While I think the general sense is the GS is a better car, I do know one or two VERY well informed people who would take a 42 over a GS every single time.

I'd take a GS every time if money were not in the equation. I see the facelift 4200cc as the best value Maserati available. They are superb cars.

I will be honest I couldn't feel much difference in performance from a GS or face lift 4200 when I had Marks for a week.........Dicky right on the button..4200 face lift is a great value Maserati....

Just to add a little more controversy one of the things that swayed me to the GS over the 4200 was the interior. I felt the 4200 interior was a more dated stayling, particularly the seats which dont look sports car at all and could have been lifted from any 4 door production sedan. For me it wasn't about performance difference but visual appeal and others I have discussed this with think the GS is overall a better looking car and IMO that's what drives the price difference.

Yep GS every time its the interior, steering wheel, wheels and surfboards that do it for me. I appreciate there is little or nothing engineering wise between them.

Ooh, I forgot the popping exhaust :)

The GS has the 3200 interior...weird that it dropped it on the 42 and then picked it ul on the GS...shame they never added the boomerangs on the GS

I didn't know that Dem. Disgraceful I know but I have never looked at the interior of a 3200!! My job for today.
