Bizarre tyre wear redux

So noticed my NSF was flat after the weekend run. Tyres are ordered, but knew there was no way I could drive to F1 on that so went to get throw the wheel in the back of Mrs Catman's 147 and take it to Tesco to pump it.

Got it off (see the safety thread)

*Very* odd wear pattern. I'm pretty good about checking my tyres, but this is right on the shoulder, and down to the belting. I know have both in the back of the car (I now also own two jacks), and will get them booted tomorrow.

Thoughts? There is *no* evidence of rubbing in the wheel arch or suspension....

What's more bizarre / worrying is that the wear is not even around the entire tyre.

Thoughts?

That tyre looks to have plenty of meat on it, apart from the inside edge..!! I would say that is out of track and too much toe out, but you say it's not round the whole tyre..?? If that is the case the belting could have gone inside and the tyre is slightly out of shape, which makes it not the same all the way round..?? You might have to spin it on something to find that out for sure, like a wheel balancer..!!

Tracking was done a few months back. I suspect it's not round either as I had a small vibration when accelerating through about 65. There are some pretty big cracks as well.

I knew there was meat on it, like I say I do check pretty regularly, but it's never been good at holding air.

Well at least I'll have a full set of 453s tomorrow.

Didn't we see exactly the same wear pattern 2 or 3 months ago, although a lot worse, can't remembered the poster though.

Mine scrubs the inside of all four, I'll be getting a full geo setup done sometime soon.

QPV was the car I *think* I think it may have been DrewF?

But yes, certainly rings a bell with me

Yes I see that C, the one that went at Rockingham during the wet handling day looked similar, it was NS front but the demise was rapid from healthy the week before, I have to assume this was under pressure during the 'spirited' early morning drive up; speed and under inflation are not happy companions!

Maybe that was it. Lost pressure on the drive home and there we go.

Oh well. It's only money :)

The side wall material is very soft and cannot handle road contact at all, it is very different from the mix used for the tread band.

The uneaveness is likeley because the tread and sidewalks are not correctly aligned when the tyre is vulcanised in the mould.

If you still have the offending rubber, have a look with a magnifying glass around the damage, chances are you will find a wavey line where the colour changes, the sidewall will probably be a lighter grey, you will be able to feel the different density with your nail.

Further to my PM Chris, I've seen similar wear on a Jag XJ8. It was through to the wire on the inner shoulder, yet from outside the car it looked like a perfect tyre with effectively full tread.

Catman could you humor me.....you stated you had an alignment done a few months ago? I know it might be a bit of trouble for you but what does your other tire look like on the opposite side in the same area, can you get at your car easy enough to check it? Maybe just jack the car on the opposite side and with a flash light spin the opposite tire and look in the same area. I don't want to jump to any conclusions on it. Before you took the tire off did you check your ball joints and tie rod on that side? The one with the offending tire?

most cars wear there tyres on the inner edges now days, its how there set up, they handle better/hold the road better.

and that tyre will just be out of shape slightly, only needs to be like 1 mm out of shape and it will do what its done.

Craig, I can do that. It's in the back of the same car right now, as I wanted to replace the tyres as a pair. It looks absolutely fine. I'd not even think about replacing if if it wasn't for making them match.

The suspension was checked about 4 months ago. If I recall the geometry was done November last year so I'm not *overly* worried about that, but might get it checked again.

Thanks, Beau. That seems to be a consensus view

Thanks, mate. I wonder who it was then. At the time I swore blind it must have been rubbing on something.
