Auto gearbox dashboard display 3200 gt

Looking for some advice on the 3200 gt just purchased. Its only fault (I hope) is that the dashboard display which shows which gear it is in is blank ! It shows the outside temperature but not gearbox position.I understand from posts by the previous owner that it was like this when he purchased the car in 2010. The car had a reconditioned gearbox fitted by Mario in Manchester and would have thought it would have been sorted then.Can any body give advice.I assume its and electronic sensor/link that provides the info.Any ideas where I should start or is it something I should ask a specialist to look at ? Thanks any help appreciated.

You could start by calling Marios to see if he remembers doing the work and if Dashboard was actually repaired or not at the time.

i think the position of the gear level is sensed by a large plastic rotary switch thing which is underneath on the side of the gearbox, its possible this is not plugged in, or indeed was never fitted when the gearbox was replaced? its fairly obvious, i replaced the switch on my car because it would not start in P and i thought the position switch was faulty but it turns out its just Italian and its just fussy about when it will start i may still have the old switch, i must have a look if i ever get back to my Garage.
