Anyone ever got their Ghibli II turbos rebuilt or reconditioned?

Was thinking about getting hold of a pair of turbos for my Ghibli II and rebuilding/reconditioning them as back-up spares. Has anyone here ever used someone they can recommend who could do this? Thanks.

I had a turbo blow on a Saab. Had it rebuilt and it lasted a week past the warranty period. (3 months I think and warranty had so many exclusions it was worthless. Warranty starts ticking from when they return it and it was a couple of months before I got the turbo fitted)
Eventually spoke to a specialist in Saab who told me that he would never recommend rebuilding as vast majority of firms who do this just dont have the skill to rebuild and majority will fail very soon after installing.
He said buy secondhand or new. Problem you will have is if buying as a backup is warranty will have expired long before you will ever need to use them!
Then again can you buy these turbos new now?

There are companies out there who can do it. You can also put 3200 Turbo's onto a Ghibli. If you want more info I can find contact details for turbo reconditioning.

Parts can be a problem with these turbos...... And I doubt if 3200-turbos fit your Ghibli.

Please could you elaborate on this for me? I've read about people doing this, but I've yet to see somebody explain what's involved. Is it a case of a straight swap of the 3200 Turbo onto the Ghibli engine, most likely followed by a remap or other fine-tuning?

One guy did it and found it worked once he sorted out a broken Lambda and exhaust restriction.

For turbo repairs speak to profi in Poland

http://profiturbo.com/

They have some 3200 units in at the moment and can refurbish both the 3200 and Ghibli units.

The 3200 turbos do fit but I believe you need to use a large hammer to persuade the chassis to give a bit.

I met "Bob S" who has a LHD Open Cup and he had to fit them to his following one blowing up on the track. He said the clearance was really tight they end up too close to the engine wall / chassis. You need a small amount of additional space, and a hammer massaged this additional space.....

Thanks chaps, that's exactly the kind of information I was looking for.

Would I be right in saying that if these Turbos work with the Ghibli 2.8, they would also work with my 222 4V (2.8 24V)? As to my knowledge, the engines are extremely similar (though I'm not sure if my 222 has more/less space for larger turbos than a Ghibli has). I'm just curious of course, I need to get the car up and running properly before I go fiddling with anything performance-related...

"The new turbos were a very snug fit and the engine had to be lifted slightly at the front of the car to accommodate them. This was done by inserting some washers underneath the engine supports between the engine and body, lifting it about about 10 mm. Some material also had to be shaved off one of the new turbo housings (the right one I think) to prevent it from touching the body, particularly when turning."

Hey Haydn,

i'd say that was probably true- it'll come down to mechanical compatibility I would think.

If you get the right person at Bill McGrath- they'd probably tell you over the phone...

It seems logical that it would fit, looking back through my pictures shows that clearance may be an issue but the information above suggests that some 'gentle persuasion' will fix that problem. I may contact McGrath for some advice.

Spacers make more sense than a large hammer !!

Cups had "ballbearing-turbos". Quite expensive and virtually impossible to find spares.... Turbos from 2.0 an 2.8 have different partnumbers. But maybye a specialist kan create something with parts from scrapped turbos?

Why is that ?

Surely any bearing can be replaced / remade ?
