Am I getting the right MPG?

I use my GS as a daily driver although most days we commute in a diesel company car but youvgetbrhenpoint.

I've ever worried about mpg on the basis I enjoy my car and I'm prepared to pay for it.

BUT - I had a 700 mile round trip the other week and decided to test what mpg I was getting to see just how much 'short' my company mileage allowance was. The result was something of a disappointment.

22.5mpg.

The journey was 90% motorway (M6, M6 toll, M42, M5) plus some A roads to Newquay.

To be fair the car was 2 up and the boot was rammed (the OH doesn't travel 'economy') but even so.

Speed wise- after a speeding ban in 2014 it was 75 - 85 with a stack of 50 zones chucked in.

What do others get?

I'm not fussed at the cost perspective per se (although at 15 - 18,000 miles/ yr of Shell V Power a saving on my £4-£5K fuel bill wouldn't be bad), I'm more concerned there is something I should be attending to?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Sounds spot on. My 3200 was about 22 mpg on a long run at 75-80 mph and single figures when I drove hard.

22 is good. You must be driving very smoothly. I've been upto 23 but this was only from 1 or 2 tanks over the last 8 years.

Thanks guys. Hours and hours of track tuition/practice teaching the virtues of smoothness perhaps paying some dividends.

I used to get 35mpg + from my BMW 135i (tuned cough!) on a run so suppose I'm a little surprised and regularly get nearly 70 from the Golf when I use that. Knew the GS wouldn't do well but perhaps expected more. It's VERY reassuring though 22.5 sounds good. Means I don't have to worry about what could be up.

Best I have ever managed was 22mpg and that was on my run back from Glasgow to the Midlands when I picked the car up taking it very smoothly.

I try not to think about the MPG - luckily the GS doesn't have a trip computer and I make a point of not calculating the figure, that way I can get on with enjoying the drive!

I think I got 24-25mpg out of the 4200 when it took it down to portsmouth but it was 4am when I started and I drove it like miss daisy at mostly 60mph in order not to guzzle fuel on a 250 mile trip
No idea what it did on the way back as I just wanted to get home

Owning a V8 engine means that fuel consumption is high in any way. Just close your eyes every time you reach the petrol station and enjoy the rest :)

310 mile round trip in a 4200, motorway all the way there & back (Sheffield to sunderland & back again) half a tank of fuel,
floored it some of the time, no idea what the mpg was but was happy it only used half a tank full.

day to day driving locally SHOCKING.

I'd check your gauge if I were you! You were probably running on vapour after 320 miles!

I have a phone app that I fill in every time I put fuel in, over 5 years the best is low 20's and the worst a paltry 4mpg
Normal daily driving average 14/16
Luckily I never cared for that global warming and tree hugging sh1te!

The one thing I did notice with the GS versus the Porsche Turbo is the insatiable thirst of a GS.
The Turbo easily returns 22-25mpg and on longer runs at steady throttle within speed limits i have had 31mpg from a flat six twin turbo manual box 450bhp car. The fuel tank is smaller than the GS and gives a range around 320 miles on a tank.

In contrast the GS has a much bigger tank (88 litres) and gives a maximum range of 300 miles including reserve. The car at best has given me 21mpg on a 200-mile round trip on fast dual carriageways, A-roads and motorway staying at speed limits. On shorter 30 mile fortnightly runs it gives around 11mpg.

I only really use my 4200 for fun days. I think the best I've had was 18.
My regular summer route is Dundee to Tomintoul and back, about 220 miles. In the Maserati it costs me about £70, in my lowly 4 cylinder 1.8 Rover Elise, it costs about half of that (and probably does it quicker) but the experience is very, very different :)

Round town and spirited driving you should get between 14.5 and 15.5 mpg.

Longer runs on free flowing motorways or A-roads then you will get 21 to 22.5 from a GS / 4200.

If you want to squeeze a little more out then put your aircon in eco mode on a long run and you can get just over 23 mpg.

Ive never had any more than that but you might if you want to drive at 56mph on an extended run.

When I owned Gransports I never even considered performing any kind of mpg calculation. As JayBlu says, they don't have trip computers so why bother. Ignorance is bliss.

Saw about 24mpg once on a run to Heathrow when I wasn't in a rush, prob cruising at 75.

On my euro hoons consistently 22mpg to France/Germany. Not bad considering. But yeah, use the performance and it is a real guzzler.

This on my GTS MC Shift.

Thanks for reminding me.

Interesting how many miles I have driven over the years I have owned it. And how much money I have spent so far on fuel. A lot less than I thought actually.

I think I am going to sell it this year as I am not using it enough. Since I last posted it hasn't moved. So it has been out once this year so far.

So after Le Mans I will be putting it up for sale.

I once got about 23-24 once up the M6 at 70ish, when I then got to Scotland I emptied a tank in just over 100 miles which I think is about 6mpg, the latter was much more fun. as I only do about 4k per year the MPG doesn't bother me, when I used it as a daily for the first year it did grate slightly spending about £150 p/w in fuel, on top of the clutch and tyres only lasting that 1 year + a service and a few other niggles the total cost of running the car as a daily for that year is quite scary, would be worth it if the drives were all fun but on a traffic filled boring commute not even a GS can make that fun, in fact with the cambiocorsa gearbox it was quite annoying a lot of the time
