I have just had a NIP come through the door, 45 in a 30. Forward facing camera. I can't even remember going through it.

Anyone know what they will do to me? 6 points? worse? Will I have to go to court? The road is one of those dual carriageway type roads, that looks like it should have a higher speed limit. They have sent me a form to fill in to say who was driving.

Thanks for any advice!

I am not absolutely sure but think that at 30 miles over the limit the offence changes from traffic offence to criminal, so you should just get a speeding ticket and 3 points on your licence. there may be other people who know better.

Peter, take the wrap off and tell them it couldn't have been you as your Lambo is blue!

P.s I think you will get 3 points and a £60 fine. The points will be on your licence for 4 years but only valid for the first 3.

3 points and £60 fine, 4 points and £90 if you are unlucky or you argue the case.

Did the NIP come within 14 days of the offence. If not then its not worth the paper its written on.

Come to think of it both my recent transgressions were 3 points and £60. One for 96 on the M6 and the other for 60 in a 30. You should be good for the same Peter and I hope it doesn't sting too much.

Unfortunately it did. :( So gutted as I have had a clean licence for ages now.

Peter, I don't think it will affect your insurance too much as the insurance companies expect drivers to pick up the odd speeding fine these days.

Im not too worried about what the insurance company think, it pisses me off how this country is gonna put points on my clean licence and take money from me, for doing what I would call a safe speed on a dual carriage way. The speed limit should be at least 50 on this stretch of road, could even be 60. No one seems to care about what I consider to be the more dangerous offences, like switching lanes without indicating, middle lane hogging, tailgating, dogging etc.

Unfortunately Peter, these days it's an occupational hazard if you drive a fast car. And, unfortunately, it's not us that make the rules or allocate priorities for prosecution.

Peter,
I guess I'm the man with experience with both cameras, police and courts.
Right now I only have two SP30s to my name but the overall tally is much higher (and all since 2003).

I really think it's best to accept it; it'll cost you £60 + 3 points (that's what I got for 43mph in a 30mph a few years back). It stays on the licence for 4 years but is only relevant for 3 years.
Regarding insurance, some want to know and some only consider it when insurance comes up for renewal. Best to play safe and let them know. So far most just make a note of it, but one charged me £17 for the points to be added. It's also worth arguing the case with the insurance company as the agents have some lee-way on the quoted amount. I did and it worked.

The thing is we can all be rightly aggrieved by the random allocation of cameras and idiotic speed limits; sadly no amount of ranting is going to change anything. Like you, one of mine was for a 40mph on dual carriageway with 30mph limit. I agree it's quite unbelievable that it's done, but some young up-and-coming local council bod thought it a good idea - probably got zits, a chip on his shoulder and a 1995 Corsa.
I feel very sorry for you and just hope you only get the minimum which you should if you just bung the old acceptance in the post ASAP.

Incidentally, anyone else old enough to remember driving when it was still fun?
No drink-driving rules, no worry about speed limits, no removing cars as MOT failures because of minor defects.
Could argue that the roads are safer now, of course. Its' true as well ....... but just not any fun.
It's that need to check the rear-view mirror and the worry that the BMW behind is an 'unmarked' that removes the all-out pleasure.
Ah ....ROSE-COLOURED SECTACLES?

If I could have my current Maserati back in 1969 I would be the happiest man in the country!

is it not odd that nearly all offences are in a 30 zone doing under 40mph not exactly dangerous driving just another way of taxing us

Dreaming on Mark.... I hear an Amen to the last statement but even if it was a contempoary Maserati!

I owned my first M/c at 7 and borght it for 1p I rebuilt the engine and got it MOT'd and sold for £70! I owned my first car at 11 an old Vauxhal Victor 101 Super Estate with a column change and a 3.0l straight 6!!! I had two cussions on the seat but used to drive it up and down the farm lane where I kept itand once confident I used to take it out around the lanes! the front wings were only attached at the top and would lift up if you went over 40 so I didn't.... Never got caught or in trouble and never crashed that one! One of my older brother's mates was jelous and knicked it, crashed it and that was the end of that! I then got a Hilman Imp that had a race engine but the head gasket was blown; repaired it but it was not a roadworthy car, kept it on the farm and just blasted around the local farm fields... That one I parked on a tree stump! No more cars till I was 17 just m/c's First road legal car was a Mk III Cortina bright orange and rust! cills were marsking tape and undersealer... How did we survive?

2b1ask1.
Excellent return on the investment - 70,000% I think.
Just like the stock market!
Oh how I recall those 101 Victors, though I never drove one with a big engine.
I suspect the ones I drove (3 in total) were all about 1.6 litres and probably sported around 50BHP.
My father was a BMC man so didn't have direct experience of Vauxhalls but drove quite a few anyway.
It was an amazing time, we didn't worry about insurance or anything - just get in and drive; friends cars, friends' parents' cars etc.
My own first I had for 10 years. It was a Minivan and 8-years old when I bought it and kept it going until I couldn't patch it any further.
Sure I used fibreglass to mend the rust holes, but found newpaper and bodyfiller just as good and easier to mould. The holes in the floor were covered in 2x1" with a rubber mat over the top which stopped too much water coming in. Amazingly enough when it eventually met its maker it had covered in excess of 250,000 miles (actual mileage unknown as the speedometer failed years previously).

Like the sound of your experiences - the Cortina must have been quick with the reduced weight of the sills. When they finished the cars were much lighter - so much cheaper than carbon fibre....maybe I'll drop lamborghini a line about that!

To comment on your final thought - yes survive we did and maybe we love our current cars all the more for the experiences?
