Air filter replacement

I am planning to replace my air filter this morning with a BMC air filter. Does anyone know if there is a "how to" guide, before I go on a voyage of discovery?

Yes there should be but it is quite simple really; jack the nearside front wheel and remove, remove arch liner and discover the airbox in the lower wing/bumper void. Assess how awful it is and cut the cable ties that will inevitably be holding it together, if you are really lucky undo the three retaining fixings on the cover facing you and pull the rotted remains of the seldom changed filter out and go and have a cup of tea to console yourself and pat yourself on the back knowing how much better you car will be with a new filter! Reverse to install...

Thanks Newton. O.K. fingers crossed.

There was a time I used to do a lot of car maintenance, but in those days a Sinclair ZX81 computer with 1 Kb of memory was considered a supercomputer.
So there was an element of trepidation before I started.
Removed front wheel - easy.
Removed inner wheel arch - a doddle.
Found airbox, no cable ties or clips, just four screws holding the cover. Removed those - easy peasy.

At this point I made the mistake of thinking this was going to be a peice of cake and I would have the whole job boxed off in half an hour.
A case of premature congratulation.

Three sides of the cover were loose but the side closest to the wing would not move. I tried to use a light to see the problem - no chance.
I tried sliding my hands down the narrow gap to see if I could feel anything - no way. My knuckles now look like I spent the morning in a cage fight.

The only option was to remove the plastic undertray, in the hope I could see what was holding it. Whilst it gave me greater access I still couldn't
see where it was held because it was in behind the bumper. However the better access did allow me to vent my frustration by waggling the airbox more violently. It finally admitted defeat and came apart.

So four hours later a new air filter is installed. Just not sure what to do with the bits that were left over.

Is it called a stifle box because?

Because the MAF = 5,200mm2 and the 'rain deflector' is 2,700mm2 quite apart from being positioned in the worst possible location to get 'clean air' and then there is hydroloc risk...

Exactly my view on the stupid Maserati stifle box

It's Ferraris way of emasculating some Masers. Reduce the air going in, and the air going out even more, I bet I breathe heavier than a 4200 at 5000rpm.

Absolutely! A bought it at 3 years old and kept it until it fell apart at 256,000. The best vfm I've ever had from a car until my wife's current 320D Touring. That's now got 270,000 and still going strong!

Blimey! A mate had one. It was rubbish. The indicator stalk fell off. Or was it the wiper? One of them.
The front wing could be pulled off the car and pushed back on. Not sure how.

And most worryingly the boot would open at random moments.
Worryingly as we often used the estate boot space for other passengers.

All true! However, at the time it was very cheap motoring after a Sierra 2.8i 4x4 estate! I wouldn't have another Montego but I was sad to see it go. I wasn't sad to see the Sierra go and that is the only Ford I've ever owned. Now that thing was complete rubbish.

Thread drift alert! Benny your signature 3rd ride the 10 speed Eddie Mercx is actually spelt Eddy Merckx. I know this as he was my hero when I used to race road and velodromes in the 70's and 80's.
I was lucky enough to see him at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, though he was managing the Belgian Cycling Team then.
Also watch out, BMW's are designed to fall off the perch at 250,000 km. I've taken 2 of them past that and they cost a bomb to do so.
