Advice please

Morning all,

Hopefully this is the appropriate thread, please advise it not.

Just after a quick bit of advice to put my mind at ease. Had the car in for some work and MOT Wednesday/Thursday, consisting new thermostat, gearbox oil change and handbrake adjustment. By all accounts the thermostat was original so on the side of caution the rad fans were removed to safely remove the bolts, a relatively invasive job I imagine? All mechanical work completed to satisfaction and MOT passed with only one advisory (the notorious handbrake). FYI The MOT was carried out at another nearby garage so the car was at two sites while not in my posession. I'm not familiar with the MOT garage and although it looks a bit back alley on street view they don't have any bad reviews and it doesn't look like it would have been parked anywhere that Joe public would brush past it.

Issue I have is that the car had a full detail in August at significant expense and more recently some additional repair work thanks to Autoglass compromising the ceramic coating when wiping down the A pillars. When I dropped the car off it was nigh on immaculate as not been driven since leaving the detailers a couple of weeks ago. However when I collected yesterday I instantly noticed significant marring over the front end of the car, wings, headlights, rear bumper, door shuts in addition to several grubby fingerprints on paint and glass. At first I thought it had been put through a car wash although on closer inspection it's only in certain areas. I really need to wash it to make a full assessment which unfortunately I can't do until Monday, but my question is how do I go about tackling this? I'm not expecting recompense but if the damage is as bad as I fear it may be another £500-700 (ball park estimate, possibly cheaper if I can get it done for cash) to put right as it's a black car and these marks stand out like a sore thumb against the unaffected areas. I appreciate it may sound pedantic and I'd like to keep the garage on side as I've no issue with their mechanical work and expertise, but I reluctantly feel I need to raise this with them as I would have expected a bit more care/attention given the exotica they work on day in day out. For all I know they spilled something and thought they were doing me a favour wiping the front end down with a tack cloth as I appreciate it's a car garage not a beauty salon. Any thoughts, opinions or advice on this? Just kicking myself for not saying anything when I dropped it off, as in I'd rather they leave any spills, smudges warts 'n all as opposed attempt to remove them. Looking at their Facebook page it would appear they do on occassion wash customer cars but whatever was done to mine seemingly took place with the bonnet up as that's largely unaffected.

Additionally it begs the question whether these ceramic coatings are actually any good as other than some pretty water beading I've experienced next to zero scratch resistance and any rectification seems a much bigger issue than just using a glaze and wax. Brand used is 'Autobead'

Always sad when you get your car back in a poor condition. I have no idea how to take this forward as I suspect the garages will blame each other ir say that it's to be expected.

I was also thinking the same thing about your final paragraph... I have only ever used a wax, and remain happy with the results.

But I was thinking it's in their interest to know these things? I mean my car is 1/10th the value of some of the stuff they work on. I just don't want to be that annoying customer trying to teach the time served expert how to suck eggs but if it's happened to mine nothing to stop it happening to someone else and them actually going for compensation.

If the garage that did work presented it to the other garage for the MOT, I'd be taking it up with them. I would expect them to have the duty of care.

What a PITA

Unfortunately the MOT was at my request and not sure if it's something they make a habit of. My logic was that if it fails for whatever reason at least it will be in the right hands to rectify it without having to book it in and wait several weeks.

I don't think that matters. If garage A took it to garage B, I'd still expect garage A to be accountable. YMMV

Might also be worth considering what contact the MOT tester would have with the car body as well.....

I'm not overly familiar with the MOT process but they don't usually have cause to lift the bonnet do they? To be honest I don't think the tester would have had a great deal of contact on the bodywork, it's mostly underneath isn't it other than firing it up, checking lights, waggle steering, handbrake. As irritating as it all is, I'm going to end up taking the hit on the repair regardless . Considering that seemingly the next halfway decent specialist is 2hrs away and I'd still like to use this one, I will however be letting them know of my findings on Monday. In hindsight I'd have been best not bothering having it detailed until this was done, only think that stopped it being done sooner was the thermostat was on back order from Eurospares when it was there in May. #sods law

The MOT tester would certainly lift the bonnet if doing a proper test

Also before I bark off, how difficult would it have been to remove the fan assembly? If it was a bumper off job it almost makes it palatable although still no excuse. They didn't mention having to remove the bumper and I'm yet to check the condition of the underside where it's been driven/ or removed as it was all resprayed in the summer (again at significant cost).
