Advice - Alfa Mito

So the time has come and Dan turns 17 on 24th December. So it is time to think of first cars. We have been looking at 1.0 litre or 1.2 for obvious reasons but when we have looked at it in depth up to a 1.4 is fine as insurance depending on make wasn’t that much difference. So he he is thinking 1.4 Mini or Alfa Mito 1.4. Mini is £900 to insure and Mito about £1000 so not much in it. We can get both for about £2.5 to £3k and he has said he would prefer the Alfa (good lad). So I know a few has had experience of the Mito and just wanted some advice on what to look out for and any major issues.

Agree buddy…Saying you first car was an Alfa is pretty cool. Although if Dan would hear me saying cool he probably would say I’m not :)

Yes. He's a child. :) I recall my niece sitting in the 4200 and describing (in about 10 minutes) my entire music collection (about 8700 tracks) as '****'.....

Rock hard suspension. Great for British roads. My brother has one. Is there not some special stuff you need to do for the twin air thingy.
Buy a 2CV. More fun per Km than anything else on the road. Or a Beetle.

Beetle engines are bigger than a 1.4 and 2CV are French so hideous and look aweful. Well to me they do.

2CV? Hideous?? Where’s Phil.

And it’s funny to be promoting smaller engines, being a Maserati owner and all that:0037:
I'm just catching up on this one.
As much as I like my quirky French stuff probably not good for a young driver learning in a modern car with all the driver aids they have.
Can't fault the little twin air motor we have with it's 105bhp Great Fun the 500 so the Alfa will be the same.

Has everybody forgotten about fun? I wouldn’t go in a motorway in a 2 CV, but around town. When all the speed limits will be 20mph soon.

Mrs. 1963 had a 1.4 Mito for a couple of years and put 20k miles on it and it was trouble free. The 1.4 is a nice peppy engine although not the most economical. She’s also had Minis in the past although 1.6’s and said she felt they where a more solid car to drive. My daughter also had a 1.6 mini as her first car and she loved it. Both fun cars and will give him loads of cred.

It will be my sons first car as he turns 17 in December so the engine needs to be small for insurance purposes. Anything over a 1.4 is silly money to insure. Never liked the 2CV but understand it had its place in history ….Mainly in the 1950’s carrying a basket of eggs over a uneven field without breaking them…..Far too old for a 17 year old.

From what I hear the Mito is generally bulletproof but the multi air unit maybe best avoided unless full history can show oil services regularly
They do need specific oil every 9k I believe and if the unit fails it’s approx 1.5k to replace

the 1.4 TB is the safe bet

Good advice there regarding services for any vehicle purchase indeed.
One thing where the twin air scores is its unique exhaust tone next best to a Abarth the critics reckon.

My 1.4TB Giulietta was still multi air. Plus when you tell the insurance it is a 140bhp+ (not sure in Mito mine was 170) they will laugh to the bank.
