Not especially Loz, rebuilt my first m/c engine by myself at 9 years old, after doing several car engines with my dad. Perkins are really straight forward though. I did rip one out of a landy series 1 with my brother that was a 4.2 coach engine! He sold it for more than he paid for the landy!

Loz,

You rang. I'm a 'B' mech unfortunately so have no clue about Chally or Warrior etc... Advice on E39 or E46 I can do though.

If you need urgent advice then PM me and I can ask a couple of mates.

Regards

HI Adrian, advice on E46 ou say.....do you mind me asking a question...The head gasket has just gone on my 2001 E46 M3...Quioted 1285 by my local specialist......does this sound about right....?....Some say it would be cheaper to skim but not being mechanical minded I've not a clue. One think is for sure I have been using this specialist for year and the chap used to be a BMW master tech and I do trust him but just wanted a 2nd opinion.

Thanks, Andy.

Andy,

That does sound about right to be honest. Especially with a good Indy. I'd say up to 1500 if it needed a reasonable amount of headwork. Its all chain driven and they require a lot of special tools for timing etc..

The S54 engine and M54 engines are pretty bulletproof though. Did you over heat? It's very rare for one to go. If its coolant loss then it's highly likely to be a bowed radiator. If its mayo then that can also be caused by short journeys and a new CCV and pipework would solve that with a good service. Both pretty cheap and easy to do.

Have you had it sniff tested and compression tested?

Adrian

Thanks Adrian, thats a great help...It was over heating....The viscous coupling needed replacing as fan was not working but that still didn't sort it out...thought it was the pump and pipework next but that was fine. I beliee they put some blue stuff through the system and it came out green and that pointed them to the head........

I 100% trust my chap but a few comments on here made me think there may be a cheaper option but your thread has helped..Thanks Adrian.

Oh and yes I do short journeys in her as works not far away....she also has 109k on the clock.

Andy,

No problem. Your mechanic sounds like a good'n and has checked all avenues. I hope it goes well and you get your car back on the road.

You have a massa and an m3! Yes I'm slightly jealous.

I wish Adrian.......Had a 3200 a number of years back and these lot have never really let me escape so I'm on here for good. Maserati tends to get under ou skin and once you've had one you become part of the family........There are better cars out there Adrian but the thing is they are not a Maserati.

Andy,

I hope you get the chance to own another in the near future. You're right though. There are other good cars, but they aren't Maserati. Hopefully I'll be driving one early next year.

Adrian.

Fingers crossed for you Adrian.......Although I will say the best car I've owned was the M3 CSL..Wish I had never sold it.
