4200 Spyder Cambio Corsa RPM does't go above 5000 Revs

Hello to you all, thanks for accepting me in the forum.

I'm a complete ROOKIE on Italian cars living in Oporto, Portugal.

My father in law ask me to "fix" his 4200 spyder Cambio Corsa.

So for start is having an interior (buttons and seats) restoration next week (720 eur)

The car has this thing of not going above 5000 revs (?!!); I tried to find the OBD port location on it with no success (! Rookie as I said) can someone help me on this one?

We're trying to read the car errors and maybe we find why the engine is not going above 5000 rpm...

If someone has the workshop or other teck books about this car it would be very appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Mário Garcia.

Is it stopping hard at 5000 rpm or just running out of power? Will it go over 5k in neutral?

ODB port is under the shelf under the steering wheel if I remember. It points downward I think

Yes it is, you may need to move the felt a little to reveal it but that will be the location.

Lack of reving could be any number of causes, is it very lumpy and erratic of just absolute 5,000 and no more?

My guess would be debris in the inlet, like the air filter breaking up or the intake blocked by something, first things first, have a look into the bottom opening of the bumper on the left of the car, maybe have a torch, there is a plastic V shape obstruction but there should be two clear D shaped openings and you should be able to see the air filter behind the V. Assess it's condition, it is supposed to be changed every year but they very rarely are!

You can disconnect the outer end of the MAF (Mass Air Flow Meter) from the air box at the inner wing, the car will run with this disconnected, check for free reving.

Other problems could be electrical and any number of issues, also how old is the fuel?

Good luck and keep us informed.

One thing it could be is that if you have a faulty wheel speed sensor (ABS and MSP fault lights on the dash) the the ECU has a hard cut limiter that stops it reving much beyond 5000 rpm.

Hello again, thanks for the replies.
The Revs are stopping hard at 5000'...Yes in neutral it goes up to same 5000'.
I'm out of the country until SAT, so when I arrive I'm gonna take a look to the OBD port and get to read it.
Is there any tech publications around regarding this car ?

I'll keep you posted.

Tks, MG.

I can't think of anything that would cause a hard cut at precisely 5000 rpm under all circumstances. Unless it's in ICE mode or something daft

Ice mode is a lot lower i thinks its 3000 or 3500 rpm in each gear except 6th.

If its an msp error then i assume with msp turned off and in neutral it would rev past 5000 rpm unless an error code is stored that would block that. Speculation on my part but even if it is a stored error code for the msp then turn the msp off and clear the code. Then try reving past 5000 rpm in neutral if it revs freely then switch the msp back on and see if the error code returns when you rev past 5000 again. All done with the car stationary and in neutral.

Hello everyone, sorry for the "silence" until now, lots of work...finally in vacations mode for 2 weeks.

I got the opportunity to drive the car for diagnostics; it returned four errors:

-P0428 and P0438 which I believe are for Catalyst temp or something around this subject!
-P0501 "Speed sensor" accordingly with the Bosch reader.

These 3 errors we were able to clean them...at least until leaving the garage :)

The last one which was always present is the P1626 "Unknown type"...something going wrong in the powertrain I believe!

Any ideas or comments?

EDIT: After cleaning the 3 first listed errors the car still doesn't go above 5000 rpms.

Does anyone have the specific DTC codes for Maserati?

Thanks in advance! Mário.

I had ABS, MSP & suspension errors & light on the hybrid when I got it. None affected the revving past 5000...I tried it quite often to make sure Therefore unlikely to be that.

Could be the MAF sensor maybe? Had this on several previous cars with similar symptoms. Most cars you can disconnect the MAF sensor & run without for a while to prove. Doesn't run at optimum as not measuring airflow but good enough to prove if MAF is the fault.

Could be blocked cat(s). An exhaust restriction will limit revs and could explain the codes.

If the cats have failed you know about it way before 5000 revs.
The engine management light will come on as well with the OBD stating you have a misfire.

Well, that's what happened to mine.
