4200 metallic exhaust noise on downshift and lift - off

Hi wonder if anyone has had similar problem. I'm new to the car and marque, I have searched the fourm and a couple of problems come up with these symptoms. Either the manifold needs a weld as they are double skinned and have separated and/or the cats are on their way out ? It does seem like an after - market exhaust on the car with small sports cats already. Or it could just be the genuine noise of the exhaust note - only tends to do it on 2000rpm on lift off or downshifting.

Any help or advice or who to turn too would be great?!

Thanks and enjoy le-mans those who have gone it looks like it's going to be a great trip !!

An x pipe makes those noises. Have you checked if the centre section is standard?

Does it happen when cold only or when hot and cold?
If it's cold only it's the manifold 'skin' if it's hot and cold. "they all do that sir".

Hi yes turns out it does have an x pipe fitted but the rear box is sounding a bit tinny
Taking it back to St. Albans EMp to see what options are next week.

Thanks to the advice on here - everyone was bang on !

Your car may have been de-catted in the past, you'll hear some sort of metallic sound if your primaries are empty or blown (in my case one had disintegrated into my sencondary) so I now have a full primary de-cat and sports secondaries. If they went to the effort of an X-Pipe they may have had the cats done also, to check this take the front o2 sensors out and have a look inside with a torch or camera.

Roger that Catman,

I've always liked the scream of the stock 360, if it can get close to that I'll be happy chap!!

Could you put a comma after 'that' next time? :)

Straight throughs get pretty frantic, but the 360 has a flat plane crank, so you're never going to get that close.

I wasn't saying it with a pause, so no. :argue1:

As with the exhaust sound, I've heard a few raspy 4200s - mainly the de-catted/X-Pipe/striaght through variants, I understand the cross/flat plane V8s giving off different sounds but I'm talking more about top end revs, all ferraris sound invidually different (355/360/430), I believe the main alteration to a Maserati is the exhaust length and the amount of space the system occupies, the mid-engined cars have short, curved exhausts where as the California sounds more like a Maser, being front engined. I'm just after that 7000rpm higher pitched rasp, which out of the Ferraris only the 360 can hit.

Well I'm keeping my back to the wall, then :)

They also had much different inlets, but I'm sure you'll find something that you like :)
