If the MSP light is on on the dash then it is off...ie isolated which means a entertaining drive if its wet.

If it is off by default there may be an issue with the software.

As long as you aware that you may get the rear end out on a roundabout then its OK to drive, but you may have an issue...try a battery re-set before spending your money at a garage.

Is there a MSP off light and an MSP warning light? Which is what I was aiming at. I recall that I have an amber ASR deactivated light, which comes on when the ASR button is pressed (apparently) and a read ASR faulty / inoperative light which comes on when the system is broken (again apparently).

I don't have my manual on this machine to check my memory, and there may be differences between the ASR and MSP indicators, but I thought it may be worth asking ;)

Yep, the orange one with msp crossed out means that the button has been pressed for more than 2 seconds and it's now deactivated. The green means the system has taken control and you been having more fun than you can manage.

I *thought* that was 'active' as in 'we're stopping you from parking backwards in the scenery' as opposed to 'you're on your own, now cos we're busted, not because you've chosen to turn us off'

If you get my drift.

I may simply be imagining what I think it *should* do.

Try simply tapping the msp button. Don't hold it down for more than 1/2 second.
Actually it shouldn't be on when you switch the ignition on and off.

If you are not switching it off by pressing and holding the button down then the light is telling you the system is not operating and may have a fault...you will need a SD2/3 to read the error code.

Wow, I hope it turns out to be something easy and cheap, but smoke is never a good thing.

Thoughts with you and your car.

Indeed but you don't know what impact it is having on the ESP modules or brakes at front wheels!
