Are you 100% certain it's the original clutch? I suppose it's quite possible if the car has spent it's life on long trips/motorways etc.

Mines on it's 3rd clutch (replaced twice) and its done 72k so does sound unusual...

That's amazing if it has never had a new clutch at that mileage, if it hasn't, then it will definitely need one any minute now, wise to get an indie inspection, worth every penny of £200-300, just to be safe. Search: Independent Maserati Specialists on here.

Mine had its first at 40k, its still on its second and I have its 3rd sitting in my garage waiting for a day to do it, I'm probably going to do it in the winter, engine will come out, chains will be done, clutch and everything else at the same time, major open heart surgery.

It could be that its been driven very carefully all its life?

No way to check the wear on a 3200 without taking it apart so unless it feels dodgy there is no inspection that will help in this regard.

I was making the point that 63K on original clutch could be misleading and there may be other stuff that an indie would notice, rather than being bitten and sorry later.

auto does have a clutch still dem?
Robert I agree an inspection would be worthwhile and the advert maybe misleading, I was simply pointing out that an inspection would not be able to tell anything about the state of the clutch.

I agree Nick, it's just that little niggle at the back of the neck, it tells you to get an indie inspection when you hear statements like that, you know what I mean..!!

Hi, its quite possible for a 3200 clutch to do 63K mine has done 56K and I know of an AC which has done 67k on a clutch but others will only do 20k if you cane them way from junctions and slip the clutch. I agree with others on here, you should get an inspection and I think it is possible to check the friction plate thickness from underneath as there is a big aperture in the clutch housing. Best allow for future replacement cost of £1500 in any offer you may make as it will need doing in the near future. It could also show the car has been used carefully, which could be a plus point.

re: clutch at 63k

I agree with getting an indie inspection though some dealers have been known to offer a free inspection if you can get the car to them.

I'd also just add that you should be aware that a major service is required at 67k involving check of the chains. My specialist informs me that they hardly ever need attention but its still a big job none the less.

On the plus side, if you do buy in the knowledge that these are necessary costs you will rear the rewards because a well sorted and maintained 3200 will run and run. I use my Assetto Corsa regularly and its never missed a beat and my expenditure has been on wear and tear items only. Keep an eye on the oil, run it on good quality petrol and it'll do you no wrong.

BUT....that all depends on you buying smart, hence the indie inspection.

Good luck with the hunt!

Hi RW3200,

Good input. is your car on our SMF Owners List yet, if it's the AC which number is it and colour..?? Good to have you aboard by the way and a great choice of car.

Cheers

Hi Robert, thanks for the welcome.

My car is on the list. I currently own #70 which is correctly stated as being black with the manual box. I rescued it last year.

I bought it after searching for just over a year. The clutch was on its last legs at the time of purchase, hence the interest in this thread.
I factored it in with the price and took it straight to Bill McGrath's. Since then I've had a service including spark plugs, valve clearances etc, and haven't looked back since.

I can see me owning this car for years, it does everything. On a recent 400 mile round trip I got better mpg than my mate got in his Imprezza and I know my journey was a lot more comfortable.

Rumi.
P.S. Nice stable.

I'm not aware I am on the members list but will investigate and put that right shortly.

I'm based in South Wales near the Brecon Beacons.

The list is a great idea and I'm glad to contribute. I'm pretty new to forums but will be making regular visits here and will try and add to topics where I can.
