Done Deal Dem!!!

Just to enlighten the thread a bit, I have just got our 3200 back from Autoshield in Manchester. I asked Marios to check everything, service it and fit the new discs all round, this is the result:

NEW SPARK PLUGS, 2 x KNOCK SENSORS, CAMBELT, CAMBELT TENSIONER, AIR FILTERS, SUMP WASHER, ANTI-FREEZE, INLET MANIFOLD GASKETS, WIPER BLADES, BRAKE CLEANER, REPLACED MISSING INLET DUCTS WITH USED ITEMS, FIT MY OWN DISCS, OIL & LUBRICANTS, PLUS LABOUR. TOTAL INCLUDING VAT = £1,556.

This was a tad more than I had expected, but I wanted it perfect for our trip to Monaco. I asked Marios to make sure of everything and he did. The car now is performing exceptionally well, accelerates and brakes better than ever. I think it is well worth looking after a car like these to the very best of your ability, good care will give good life, performance to be enjoyed and to be admired by others, what more can you ask for?

i dont think thats a bad price.....im tempted to take it up north....cheaper labour??

my brakes will need doing next year.....

I don't think it's a bad price either, though a little unexpected. The Inlet Ducts I think were the pipes off the back of the Air filter cans, breather pipes I think.
The only issue I have at the moment, which you guys may be able to help with is this:
From a standing start, ram the foot to the floor and the car is like a bucking bronco. Travelling at say 30mph, ram the foot to the floor and the car is just the same as a standing start. It will accelerate very well if you press gradually, but hit the floor with the pedal and it does not want to know. This is an auto of course, which normally have kickdown just like my XJR, if I boot that to the floor it goes like the proverbial until it hits maximum revs, then changes up. This car you can't do that, engine light comes on, revs die off, then back on again and so on, terrible.
Any ideas anyone???

Is it the ASR cutting in, try it in sport mode or with the ARS turned off and see if it behaves the same.

I assume that replacing the Knock sensors was an attempt to cure this problem, if it was I would take it back to autoshields as they have lots of experience and are well regarded,so should be able to find the problem.

Thanks Rex, I have let Marios at Autoshield know the symptoms and await his response. I have tried it in sport also, same result, I have not tried to switch anything off and I don't get any other warning lights flashing on apart from engine management. If I were getting wheel spin and the ASR cut in, I would still have some revs, in this instance the revs suddenly hit zero, then back up again, so I don't think it's ASR. This was a symptom I reported to Autoshield and they originally said it could be too much turbo boost? Diagnostics threw up the knock sensors, so I told them to change both to be sure. It's almost like something just kills all the power for a second, or so, ease off the throttle and revs are back immediately. Really weird and frustrating. If you accelerate gradually, bags of power and accelerates well, push too hard and this problem starts up. I will wait to hear from Marios and let you all know what they think.

I have been offered a very nice, rare coloured 3200 (1 of 2) but that car is missing 2 years of servicing and has had 6 owners. What are your thoughts on the high amount of owners?

EVO eng, the owners wouldn't bother me and with a 2001 3200 at 12 years old six owners in low....These cars can change hands every year or even 6 months....Its more inportant to look at condition and history than owners.......

Is the rare colour the yellow one thats been for sale ?

i would be thinking of the throttle body or throttle pedal pot here? has the throttle body ever been refurbed? you could check the voltage coming out of the pedal sensor and make sure its within the limits (400mV to 3.6v i think) If this was off setting you might get weird behavior when applying max throttle if the sensor or the throttle body were not right. The other thing to remember is that the ECU adjusts the engine ignition map over a long period based on the output form the knock sensors, so your engine may just be adapting to the new sensors? Autoshield will have reset the map when the knock sensors were changed and it will take a week or so for this to settle down. Having said that this sounds like a problem not just settling in. My 3200 is a little under powered when cold (as it should be) but never lurches or any thing like that it should behave. does it get better when it warms up?

I had wondered about the coil with the sudden cut off symptom. Possible throttle body/pot/sensor?? It's fine if you accelerate gradually and fast, any sudden request for power and it all starts again. The car is always warm, I would never try full throttle when cold. I am desperately hoping it's not the Engine ECU, I don't think it is, otherwise I would get the same symptoms when under normal acceleration I think. It only happens when I hit the floor with the pedal, so I am thinking maybe the sensor on the pedal? No contact yet from Autoshield, but I guess he is trying to figure out what this could be before he phones me. Fingers crossed, more to follow.
Contactless what Dem, throttle pot?

Contactless throttle body. Two members on here provide the service. Bill and Boomerang can both swap your throttle body for a contactless one. For me the swap resulted in no more limp mode since the day I installed it. Bill is a little more expensive but is in the UK so wil be the most convenient for you. Luuk (boomerang) is in Holland and was great to deal with from here in Australia.

Neil, thanks for that suggestion, I will keep it in mind.
However, I have done a bit of research in the workshop manual and it looks like it could be the Solenoid Boost Control Valve, which sends a signal to the waste gate from both turbo's, which in turn governs the overall pressure to the engine and the CAN. If the pressure get's too high for whatever reason, then the injectors are cut off to save damage. I have discussed this with Marios and his head mechanic at Autoshield and they are thinking along the same lines. So she is going back in on Tuesday, Marios will take me out for lunch whilst she is being checked and adjusted, if she can not be completed within an hour or two, Marios will take me home. Now that's what I call service with a smile!!
