As you may have seen, I'm on the hunt for a Gran Turismo. This has popped up on Auto Trader...

Does anyone have any background on it?

It's had 1 MOT, so looks like it's been off the road for a few years before/during repairs.

No nothing about it specifically, but to me that's a lot of red flags. Light panel damage that meant the bumper and bonnet got replaced? Wrap. Basically not moved it's entire life at 3500 miles. I think your budget will give you a good selection to choose from - and I wouldn't include this one!

Oh yes for sure. Red flags everywhere. For it to be written off before it's first MOT where it's value would be significantly higher, it surely would have been more than light panel damage

It was up for sale about 6 months ago and wasnt wrapped at that point. Its red under the wrap and from what i can remember the paint was ok in the pictures. Can be hard to tell in pictures but nothing obvious stood out.

They story went at the time that it was light panel damage and bought as a cat car to repair but never got round to being done until it appeared around August time last year.

If the damage occurred in the first 12 months of the insurance being taken out then it isnt unusual for a new for old clause to be on the insurance. So any damage in the first 12 months you would get an identical brand new car or equivalent value payout.

Thanks, that's handy to know. I've spoken to the chap selling..

He said an older guy owned it, wife died and his life fell apart. The car wasnt repaired as a result. The car was then repaired and the guy now selling bought it (5/6 months ago) and he then had it wrapped white.

I understand that BC, although any cat car is a risk and a Maserati even more so. It may be ok as a long term keeper, but could be difficult if you ever need to move it on. A GS isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think it looks good value and it's a known car (I'd want lighter wheels though).

How often do you change your cars?

Selling a Maserati is a challenge most days, selling a Cat Car is near impossible unless it's dirt cheap and with no history, this red/white car is a risk few would take.

Not often, but I'd like an enjoyable experience owning my first Maserati, not a money pit/bodge. Heart is looking at the photos (bonnet, unmarked interior etc), head is realistic and anticipating everything that could be wrong. Seeing it's been through copart it's probably been lifted on a forklift...!

Its all about doing your own inspection and due dil , If its a keeper for a few years its a no brainer providing you do your homework , when it comes to selling make it known , you buy a cat car because you get more for your money , hence you can enjoy it for a bit and sell it at a reduced rate accordingly ...........ive done it several times for cars ive got and never ever had issues selling , just be up front and honest about it

Funnily enough this car drove past me at the weekend around Southampton. The white wrap and gangsta wheels really don't do it any favours..... the wrap in particular gives off 'hiding poor repair' vibes.

If I went for it, the wrap would be removed. Aware what a wrap usually hides.. so it's a risk

Do they have pre repair photos etc?

Interesting line re, selling the car as I have too many, and this one needs to go to make room for another?!?

Hmmm I note it says uprated suspension and an x pipe... OK I know this is a stereotype, but older drivers are unlikely to go for mods like that, especially on a new car voiding the warranty... I would want to know if there was suspension damage requiring the new suspension as that would indicate far harder damage.

Without making blind assumptions , but things to weigh up on the small amount of information given , New X pipe to me on a car so young with so low miles suggest to me its gone a little off road due to the accident , ( have a darn good look underneath and check whether the seller will allow you to have a wheel alignment done pre sale ) if he agrees then he has nothing to hide which is a good sign
Wrap wise , well you you should know what potential £££ you might be dealing with to rectify things , to we know whether its cat N or S ..............I suspect by the price it was a cat N

Good advice there Loz.
Even arrange for it to have an MOT test.
Agreed Phil , from what i see , the era of the cut and shut boys have long been over , ( its easier for rogues these day to steal another like vehicle and clone it, rather than go to all the trouble of cut and shut ) its a lot f car for the money and I certainly wouldn't be put off by spending that sort of money , but do your due dil as best you can . Just sometimes fortune favours the brave :auto14:

Decided to leave this one, it looks to have been repaired well but a few bits don't fully add up. Looks like a good opportunity, and if I wasn't trying to de-stress my life I'd have gone for it.

I don't think there is anything particularly untoward with it, it's just not the car for me at this point in time
