cheers guys, the main dealer has offered me a good price for the QP, I'm naturally fearful that if I hold off this offer may not stand. Whereas If I take the plunge at the gt and perhaps haggle a little, I can trade back in a year down the line but at what cost?

SUppose it is all about cost to change....but I would say if they are offering you a good price then its because of the mark up on the GT......You may get less against a cheaper 4.2 but it's all relative to the cost to change......So I would say if you went for a 4.2 GT at 35k you would get less for your car probably but maybe would lose less in the long run as well. A 2007/2008 GT has done most of its depreciation and is showing signs of slowing down unless it has star ship miles on it. The 2010 car at 43k still has a good chunk of depreciation to do in the next year or so. If you are really looking for a better sound then upgrade the exhaust on your QP unless you really have to have a GT that is...It's a great looking car..........The other thing I suppose is that a 4.2 GT should be cheaper to insure and maybe a biyt lighter on the pocket than a 4.7 maybe...but sure someone who has had both will share their experience......

I have a 4.7 auto so you can see what I like but coming from a 4.2 QP to a 4.2 GT you will benefit from the car being a little lighter with a tad more power. The price of the 4.2 is not silly but people are struggling to value it as you rarely see a 4.2 registered any later than 2008. Another £5-10k would see you nicely in a 2010 4.7 auto but if you really like this car then it sounds ok.

Cheers, is the exhaust on the 4.2 gt different as this is the reason for upgrading?

Just one more thing...and I will shut up in a minute....You mention skyhook over your QP's fixed rate springs...........I would take your sportier fixed-rate Bilsteins, stiffer springs, lowering ride height and uprating front brakes (360mm carbon-ceramic discs and six-piston calipers courtesy of Brembo) over the Skyhook adjustable dampers anyday. There is a reason Maserati dumped them for your sporty QP. Unless the QP is too harsh for you that is....Anyway what ever decision you make I'm sure you will enjoy...

I would have not expected a 2009 QP and a 2010 GT to depreciate at a materially different rate FWIW.

As has been said, just buy a sports exhaust for your car - job done and a shed load saved!

Spot on.........unless you have to really have a 4.2 GT that is......

looking forward to driving this car on Tue/Wed and hopefully it ticks my boxes. Cant seem to locate a comparison of the 4.2 QP exhaust Vs 4.2 GT anywhere.

I'll keep you all updated.

I have driven an '08 QP GTS and an 08 GT and there was not much difference is sound, if anything the sound in the QP was more sporty. The real difference was in the way the two cars drove, the QP had the fixed rate springs and the GT had Skyhook, I much preferred the way the QP drove. Personally I would not change to the 4.2 GT for the exhaust, I think you will regret it and then be left with a car that is depreciating at a far greater rate than your QP GTS.

Having said the above, there is a WORLD of difference between the QP GTA and the 4.7 GT, the noise is truly off the scale and it goes so much better than the 4.2, or the QP for that matter. If it was me, I wouldn't even think about buying the 4.2, especially at that money, I would wait for a 4.7 to come along.

virtually nobody bought a 4.2 after the 4.7 came out in 09...

So a 2010 4.2 is a pretty rare beast... a good 08 4.2 is still nearly £40k... So what's a newer one worth ?

If it is a later car.. them the chances are it's a very full spec.... and that might be important..

Whilst we all agree the 4.7 is a better package, in the real world the only differences are..

The Noise.... easily sorted with a sports exhaust..
The 4.2 needs to kick down to get a move on (which it does) and the 4.7 doesn't .....We all forget having been used to daily diesels / turbo's with loads of torque that proper engines need some revs to deliver...

I would have thought the price of that 4.2 is pretty soft.... and the depreciation no worse than others... Pauper Spec and abuse and High miles do the most damage to values..

If you like it ... do it ..

Does the 4.7 handle better as well..They changed the set up I believe as this was always criticized for being to soft and too much roll. Again this can be sorted with some FD springs I suppose.

But agree with above if you like it buy it.

The 4.2 had a dead spot around centre of the steering which was odd......sorted on the 4.7.
cheers wattie

Just get a 4.2 GT and put a Larini exhaust on it - sounds just brilliant and imo what it should have sounded like from the word go! People outside can here it as standard but inside I couldn't here it enough! This is coming from someone who isn't into modding, I just heard it on another car and knew the second he started it up I wanted (needed!) it in my life :)
Good luck
