That is interesting ..... If it is a Racing it was a rare car I believe, didn't think the Racing was sold in the UK ..... Money pit or bargain...?

I hate to be a pedant but I'm something of a Biturbo anorak and that's not a Racing.

The Racing was produced between 1990 and 1991 with 230 examples produced, on the registration document the date of first registration is 17 March 1994, so too late to be a Racing. It isn't beyond the possibilities of the DVLA to **** things up, there's a 1984 Biturbo on Ebay that is on a 1994 L-registration. The Racing was only available in black or red and the fact that this car is white is another giveaway. In addition, the Racing had a spoiler at the base of the screen, darkened rear light lenses, electronically adjustable suspension and a full black leather interior, this car has none of these.

If you look at the engine bay, you will see that this car is the 18v version (different cam covers) and not the 24v that should feature in the Racing (the Racing engine should have the code AM490 and should have "V6 4AC 24" and "Racing" written on the cam covers). The car looks to me as if it is a late catalysed version of the 222SE as it has the later type headlamps and Shamal style wheels (both of these do feature on the Racing but for the reasons stated previously, it ain't a Racing). Having said that I have never seen such a late example of the 18v versoin. The "expert" that the vendor claims has looked at the car was obviously not much of an expert after all, otherwise he would have noticed all the key features that were missing and the statement about the "rare manual dogleg gearbox" is nonsense too, most late Biturbos had this gearbox.

Having said all that, it does look like a reasonable car but only worth the same as any other Biturbo in a similar condition.

For the fellow anoraks amongst you the Racing is almost identical in appearance to the Italian market only 2.24v (apart from the interior and rear light lenses. Early versions of the 2.24v featured two tone bodywork, Rifle Grey on the lower part of the car then red, black or white on the upper surfaces. Later cars tended to be all one colour with some new colours becoming available including green). The 2.24v featured a similar version of the engine, a 2 litre V6 24v but was rated at 245bhp compared to the Racing which was rated at 285bhp. The Racing featured a lighter crankshaft, conrods and pistons, different exhaust valves and combustion chambers, and different turbochargers.

The Racing is not a particularly well known Maserati but is seen as the holy grail for some Biturbo enthusiasts as it was the ultimate version of the original Biturbo format before the introduction of the Ghibli. In fact the Racing was used as a kind of testbed for new technology which later featured on the Ghibli and Shamal. It is not particularly well known in the UK as they were never officially sold here although there are a few cars here now, I know of 2, one black, one red. Good cars are quite sought after now and go for around £10k GBP.

Hope that is of some interest, I need to get out more :)

I see on the vendor's other advert for the tractor that he appears to be braking (sic) for parts, perhaps they're in the road in front of him? :)

Sent the seller a message on Ebay and he has now withdrawn it from sale. He thanked me for my message and says he's now decided to keep it. He has it booked in at Bill McGraths for some remedial work.

Good stuff as always DickyB. Auction has ended now anyhow, wonder if he sold or realised his listing was inaccurate.
