You know when it all goes quiet

I was in the pub last night with a mixture of friends and newbies. It turned out one of the newbies lives 2 streets from me and had seen me about on my Raleigh Superbe, We chatted about this and that and suddenly out of the blue he said Have you a Maserati?
The ten or so people around the table all stopped talking at once and there was a pregnant pause that was palpable
Yes a black one came the reply
All at once
Oh well done, lucky sod, fantastic, Can we see it, Where from, etc etc
I had never experienced such a reaction, the ladies were swooning and I am now a local celebrity

I have owned it 2 years now and certainly do not keep it in the garage all the time yet they all seemed surprised that one was nearby and that an old tow rag like me had one!
Good reaction though

Have yet to have a negative reaction Dave, it does seem that masers are the "universally appreciated" supercar.

The other, but a rather chilly silence, which I'm anticipating soon is when some of my colleagues discover I've bought one, even if it is an 8 yr old car and even though we share our group income equally!...

As above, reaction from the public has been surprisingly positive, couple of thumbs up and being allowed out of side roads (same as the Caterham).

Great story.

Tends to illicit that response from my own experiences as well.

And can relate to the negative reactions from work.

It's for that reason I never drive mine in.

Our local take away have our address as the house with the Maseratis Silverstone, in fact even the DHL delivery driver links our name with the house with the Maserati

Lol, I must admit mine very rarely get negativity. I've had old women stop me as I trundle down the high street and say "I think you need to fix your exhaust" :D

Which was obviously met with a thunderous rev off and a "Oh Yeah, I'd better get that looked at"

Out of all the cars I've owned it gets many thumbs up, you can see people mouthing "Maserati" as they look at each other and I even had one young attractive lass on a bike say "Wow, I've always wondered what a Maserati sounds like" :D

The few people at work who have spotted it on my driveway (I live nearby and walk) have been positive "you've earned it" "you only live once" etc, it's my immediate colleagues who are likely to give me the frosties - a friend asked my wife on W-app if I'd "got a mid-life Maserati" - yess!. Public reception has been very good. I was surprised that the stock exhaust would trigger nearby car alarms at start-up - perhaps the valve flaps in the exhaust open even in normal mode? It used to happen all the time in the Caterham - especially when trying to trundle inconspicuously through a village in high gear at 25mph.

I paid for the pleasure of using it to take the wife to the airport at 06:00 on Saturday - when the sun came out later it was speckled in fine white spots - saltier than a packet of crisps.

The combination of the badge and reflected glory of Maserati's more exotic and expensive models, that my humble Ghibli diesel has attracted a lot of positive comments from more than a few. Some thinking I am some sort of successful person, which I am afraid to say, given I work in the financial markets in the city of London which are currently on their knees, would be far from true !!!
The fact that its just a rival to any 5 Series or E Class diesel gets lost in its relative rarity and the brand name, and Maserati wisely made the diesel look identical to the petrol.

I am in very much the same boat. Great excitement from 5 year olds to elders, friends and fellow road users. But I eventually let the beans spill at work one day when my manager saw me trawling on sportsmaserati and commented- " Ah. You will be able to own one soon, like in 15 years, once the kids have left the roost!". I couldn't resist and quip back saying may be I don't have to wait at all.:)
Since then, he does not come in even for small talk. Which was bang on 8 AM everyday without fail!
I might have a chance to drive into London and to my office in Aldgate on 24 December but just dread the reaction from my work colleagues. :strangle:
