The on board photography is stunning especially when you remember that it was shot in 1971. This is complemented by a soundtrack that adds to the sense of danger.

My favourite film too and my favourite part of any film

I was quite disappointed with the recentish sequel. I though the story quite good, but the "world" was no where near as atmospheric. It was so clean and unpopulated. The first film was an amazing realisation of a steam punk future.

Wasn't really Steampunk IMNSHO but possibly an argument too esoteric even for SM

The point was that most of the environment was unpopulated in the sequel because they'd all gone to a 'better life in the off world colonies....'
