Yet another set of rear tires

Just ordered another set of rear tires for my QPV. The last set lasted just over 5k miles which is ridiculous as I don't really push the car much to start with. How much do you average?

I've had mine on two and half years and they now getting near the limit, gonna change them soon. They weren't fresh when I bought the car either so I've had a lot of miles out of them.

15k miles, they are Pirelli P-Zero's.

What are you fitting, Pzero's?

Other than being a cr@p tyre, they come with 7mm of tread not 8mm...go figure???

5-8K mile is what I get out of my PZ rears. Front now shod with Michellins so will get Michellin rears as and when. I know there's not a lot of love for the PZs on this forum, but I never had any problems. Maybe I drive like Miss Daisy and it's always warmer in the SE. Stuck like glue on the continent when doing the twisties in Spain. But very very soft so not surpised that they don't last long.

To be fair they were on my Jaguar XF when I bought it and done nearly 20,000 miles the fronts still look the same and the rears still legal.
Had no problems at all but the Summer was hot and the Winter mild.
Only got 275 BHP too.

Indeed, my car is wearing the 18in wheels. The tire dimension are 285/40/R18 and couldn't find any other manufacturer making them. Stupidly expensive tire too. £600 for a set of two and hard to find.

Just as a note, was looking for tyres for my C63 AMG and prices are a little high. Came across Tyre Leader here in UK. Got best price on tyres by quite a way. They also do 'older' tyres. I'm trying to research what the negatives are to fitting a pair of tyres manufactured in 2013 (P Zero) still in their pirelli wrapping - at £79 each forv285/30/19 it's a huge saving! Nobody seems clear on unused tyres - only on old fitted tyres?

I would assume the rubber still dries out and cracks just not as fast as if used and exposed to the elements.

A few thing...

TyreLeader are German and all tyres are shipped from there. They advertise having everything in stock but they often don’t and so don’t be surprised if the delivery takes longer and you have to chase them for info. If it works, it’s great, if it doesn’t...

When it comes to Pirelli, there are few things to know.

Firstly, they manufacture the same tyre across multiple sites and are not required to tell the consumer what the source factory is. This means there is a variance between seemingly the same tyre across different users. That’s why some people think they are better or worse than others. I’ve had nothing but poor experiences with them and so I choose to avoid them. Theoretically, you could even get a pair that look the same but where made in different factories and cause an imbalance to your car.

Secondly, the issues are with the speed at which they get to temperature and the low grip in that period. As others have mentioned, in warm, dry weather, they seem to be fine. It’s the cooler days that they struggle. In fact, many cars will do a track day faster on Pirelli but that’s not useful on a crisp day in Blighty.

Finally, there are several different styles of PZero and the compound recently changed and by all accounts, this has improved the tyre. Therefore very recent sets with the latest tread designs may well be far better. Pirelli isn’t stupid and knows that the higher end marketplace favours Michelin recently.

If it was me, I wouldn’t buy a set of Pirelli that’s been sitting about. No matter the bargain they might seem to be.

Thanks for that. Useful information indeed. I had wondered why I see some PZero with different tags such as MO (Mercedes) and other tyres identical in every other way without that marking. The factory and I assume compound and/or tread must be different

I agree on temperature. My AMG CLS C63 shudders along the ground when cold and full lock (getting out of driveway) a known Mercedes geometry issue but once warm sticks very well indeed!

Michelin's may be a better bet - maybe....

I think here in Ireland there's a limit on tyre age for NCT (Irish MOT) though I think I was corrected on this before....

I think I might chance a pair of rears at 84 quid each, even though I don't like P-0's can maybe get some winters and whip em off in summer/if they are ****.

I converted to Michelin ps4's. My bum no longer clenches in temperatures below 10 degrees. While driving that is.

I have a PS4 front O/S cos I had a puncture - otherwise all P-Zero's - I don't like them cos of the jumping effect u get on lane changes, but to be fair they generally grip well for me and I've never lost the back end or felt like I was going to not that I'm a press-on driver. Lately though cos they are worn I get more wheel spin.....

I think I might go all PS4 or one for the other front and try the P-Zeros above, too much choice!

I've got exactly the same feeling when I drive my that the rear is generally unsettled when going over slightly uneven surfaces e.g. lane change etc.

The difference between Michelin PS4s's and P-zeros is night and day in anything other than dry warm conditions.

On my last four 400+bhp cars, I've tried most of the usual suspects, and my favourites used to be Goodyear Eagle F1, until Michelin brought out the Pilot Super sport some years ago, which I found just as good, but lasted MUCH longer as well!
Now the PS4Ss are here there is nothing better for grip and longevity for 90% of driving.

I was reminded once again how terrible the P-zeros were just last week when I went and test drove another GT-S. It was a horrible, wet, greasy day, and on the 100 mile journey there I had nothing but confidence in my car (with PS4Ss fitted). The other GT-S had P-zeros all round, and it was terrible! The traction control was coming on and the car squirming around underneath me with anything more than a gentle foot. It was honestly like driving a completely different car! It can be quite exciting at times ;) but if you actually want some grip, get the PS4S.

I think that is a QP issue full stop in the ones I've driven as they all seemed to do that to an extent. The E55K felt planted in comparison. I've not driven a QP GTS and would be keen to see if the fixed set up changes this. Maybe it is a QP Skyhook issue.

WHS ^^^

The PS4 is still 90% the tyre of the PS4S in my limited experience as well. Certainly worth looking at as an option.

The XJL SuperSport with 510bhp going through rear PZero's in the current weather/temp is very unsettling and **** right scary at times!

I think Mrs MLCs Z4 is on Pirellis, I got it sideways on the A24 roundabout one moist evening. Felt like I was Karting again! Great fun but don't tell her... ;)
