Wiper arms - paint them???

For some reason - one of my wiper arms is badly faded - you can see the grey metal beneath it.

I've been advised to simply take them off - rub them down, get an aerosol and re spray. Allow to dry and do a few coats.

What do you think??? Is it easy to remove the wiper arms?

Seems a cheaper option than buying the actual wiper arms.

Cheers

Mark, I believe its a total *****.......;)...to get them off.......if you can better to do in situ as long as you exercise extreme caution.......!!!!!! BUT...I think they did come as a matt finish.......dull to start with ....so be sure to get finish correct!

A tip which might help - after loosening off the 13mm nut up to the end of the spindle thread, hit the hinge point on the wiper arm (about an inch from the nut) with the palm of your hand a couple of times to release it. The reason they are difficult to remove is that the spring sets up a tension so that the wiper arm is at a very slight angle relative to the spindle, which makes just pulling upwards fairly futile. Hitting the hinge point (not too hard!) momentarily releases the tension and it should pop upwards. If it doesn't, try a bit of WD40 first.

I had real problems trying to get mine off when I had to take the scuttle panel off to do the pollen filter. I went with softly, softly approach and it got me no where. In the end, I just grabbed it, wiggled it hard and dragged it round the screen, and it just came right off

Better to use a smaller puller Matt , comes off with ease with just a few turns saves any damage when it suddenly breaks free if you tug it off

Loz, agreed, but I did not have a puller small enough, there is a mini on especially for this job:

If anyone would like my old set of wiper arms (just replaced them, the blades and the pollen filter) you can have them for the cost of the postage. That way you can mess about with them to your hearts content before swapping.

Hand book states you should change them after 3 removals????? Another Maserati £££££ making scheme?

Peter - That's why I bought the new ones as I didn't know how many times they had been off in the past to change the pollen filter. Anyway, turns out the pollen filter was from 2002 (when the car was built) so probably never been off!!

Good thing to change the pollen filter, especially now. All those fields of yellow around our house are killing me and my allergies..............

It needed doing! I used a non-genuine part from Eurospares at £18.
There is also a very good thread on here about the problems associated with a build up of leaves and other "stuff" that can get into the air intake and cause all sorts of trouble, but I'm pleased to say my system was completely clean.
