Spain has some fantastic reds, you see lots of rioja but not many Ribera which is from the same grape but grown a little closer to the equator.
I’m actually about to take the wset2 wine exam as I wanted to learn more about wine to help me grow a small investment portfolio and understand more about what I am drinking.

I’m a big fan of Ribera del Duero’s ... and possibly prefer them over Rioja’s....

I was bought an Alion 2006 Ribera del Duero for my 40th by a friend who has great taste in wine and it is one of the best reds I’ve ever had....

The good lady and myself are no connoisseurs but we can generally tell a wine derived from grapes to one from vinegar.

Have found Laithwaites/Sunday Times Wine Club (same outfit) to be great value. Signed up years ago for a 12 bottle case at £60 including delivery and a couple of Dartington glasses and thought they were all decent. Every time I cancel membership they phone me after a few weeks with similar offers and I simply cancel membership after each delivery. We have never had a bad bottle and found them much nicer than Naked Wines or anything for a tenner in the majority of supermarkets.

Don't have an Aldi near me but found Lidl wines to be super value.

I do a trip to northern France once a year during the “foire au vin” week where all the super market use that as a footfall driver during the back to school season and fill the boot of my SUV.
What’s not not like with StEmilion Grand Crus for 10eur, Cru bourgeois for less than 10eur and some 3rd-5th Grand Cru Classes for 20-30eur...
Might have to find a B-plan post Brexit though

stopped off at the Auchan supermarket in Calais on the way back and loaded up with wine at 3.5 euros a bottle, probably taste like cr4p
You may be pleasantly surprised. Have always thought the best wine in the world is the one you like the most. Regardless of price and most definitely regardless of what someone else may or may not think.

100% what Navcorr said above..

The £120 bottle (that’s a lot for me) of Gevrey-Chambertin I opened last week & was so ruff I chucked it is testament to that..

G-C can be a bit earthy at the best of times. Haven't bought any for 5 years mind you. Partial to an occasional drop of Volnay - more velvet in style.
Have been rather taken by Ladoix in recent years too. Buying in France the price above will get you an excellent Corton-Charlemagne.

Agree as well.....You find the very expensive stuff is an Aquired taste. Just because it costs a shed load doesn't mean you'll like it. Most I find too heavy......

Some of the expensive stuff is not very good either. There's a cost factor in the fact that it is Gevery-Chambertin (for example) in the same way that Champagne carries a premium.

I love sparkling wines but it was costing a fortune every week. So I had a light bulb moment and went out and bought a soda stream........ Job done! Saved me a bucket.
My favourite is Pulpito for the weekend but Aldi's Fire Tree PG/SB is a cracking cheap plonk! DSC_0381.JPG

Wine is very individual and I am no connoisseur ..... I know what I like and that's good enough. I've had 30/40 £ bottles and they have been bloody awful and the £7/8 bottle I have each week has been much better..... I don't like beer and lager but love wine and finding new and exciting ones is great. One I have found lately is Passerina and Pecorino both In Tesco finest range....and also like Calvet Prestige Bordeaux Savignon Blanc.
Grabbed one of each as I was queuing this morning. Looking forward to giving them a try
