Why I'm going EV, and another thing!!

Thought I would sit down and calculate the savings if I did 12K a year business mileage in an electric car as opposed to my M140i averaging 35mpg (proven over many years now on average) with UL at £2 a litre.
The result, I would save £90 a month.
And that is assuming half the charge would be from my excess solar panel generation, and the rest on a cheap overnight 7.5p tariff. Maybe being a bit optimistic.
So really, not much saving at all.

The way I've read the regulations is that If you have a business ev you can still claim the 45p a mile on another fossil car on basis of longer trips

The ev is best for those uou have very low business miles but high personal as the bik chatge is 2% and nothing to do with actual business miles vs personal. You could get an ev for the business and practically never do any business miles

I'm guessing that is after claiming 45p per mile?

No, I have a fuel card along with car allowance having opted out.
So all the fuel I put in the car whether for business or personal actually costs me 40% tax as a BIK, the BIK being the total amount of fuel I spend a year.
So approximately £1,250 a year in additional tax.
Having an electric I have no means of receiving any payment from the company for this, but if charging at home on a low tariff isn't a lot anyway. So that would be my saving having an EV, £1,250 a year less any charging costs. Bugger all really.
I still claim tax back on the business mileage at 45/25p so that brings in £2,000 which is greater than the tax I pay for the fuel.
The more I drive for business, the better off I am!!

Just depends on people's personal circumstances. No one size fits all. Keeps the grey matter busy

Indeed, as you say, if your mileage is mostly private it is totally different when your mileage is mostly business, based from home, with no private commuting, which is my case.

First time shopped at tesco and charged the i3 for free. Was there for an hours so only extra 40 miles. Car park let's you be there 5 hours. That would be more than enough to charge a i3. Obviously a loss leader for tesco but did feel good getting free elec
That's great, enjoy it while it lasts......

Ferrari recently announced at their AGM that they will produce their first fully electric car in 2025.

It will make almost half of its models fully electric by 2030 to reduce emissions with a reputation built on the prowess of its traditional combustion engines.

They unveiled plans to power 40 per cent of its cars by battery alone, another 40 per cent will be hybrid and just 20 per cent combustion engine with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by the end of the decade.

At the moment, just 20 per cent of its cars are hybrid and it does not have an electric-only model.

All of this was underpinned with a detail commercial plan for its impressive future financial growth and investor returns.

The fully electric model will use technology from Their racing team, including its electric engine and its understanding of how to reduce energy loss.

Rationing created the healthiest diet the UK population has ever had and over 1/2 the uk population was banned from burning coal or logs in the 1950s.

And if we were under house arrest there would be no car accidents........

Most accidents occur in the home!

what I was saying was that despite perception that government control over our lives is a new thing, it’s been going on forever.

As anticipated, Public Charges are going up in price. GeniePoint have just increased their price to £0.57 pkw + connection fee.

This means that it will now be cheaper to use Petrol in my hybrid than 'public' electricity as it is a heavy 4x4 and is not that efficient... unless I top up at one of the fast reducing 'free to use' chargers at the local supermarkets and Civic centres... but I have noticed these are now getting harder to find empty due to EV owners hogging them for hours to avoid any electricity costs.

Of course dedicated EVs will still make more sense as the connection fee only takes up a small % of the total charge cost and they are more efficient.

As I mentioned up there ^^^ when Bristol hiked their prices by roughly 50% overnight.

New Merc EV prototype now does over 750m to a charge. And not from bigger/heavier batteries - but from more efficient motors and therefore lighter batteries. Its miles per kwh of power is twice that of most current EVs. So it looks as though the technology is heading in the right direction.

That's another good excuse to wait. No EV now will be comparable to what is on the market in the next year++.

You are quite correct - EV cars are taking huge strides forward. Given how good my current E-Tron is, I'm sure I'll be amazed by my next one, which will be December 2023 (as I'm half way through a 3-year deal on my current one). I'm hoping the next one will be cheaper, also.
