WHICH MASERATI?

I had a 4200 for many years and after selling it I have always missed it! (but I have always kept reading this forum!)
Now I am thinking to go back but not sure which one to buy.
  1. I feel the grandsport is the car that will maintain its value best and being an improved 4200 (at least in my eyes) is the easy choice? I really like the shape.
  2. I am also tempted by early granturismo (at about the same price of a gransport) but they will definitely be depreciating more although being a younger and more modern car will be perhaps more reliable (never had a problem with the 4200 though)?
  3. finally I have seen 2014 quattroporte diesel with less than 40.000 mile just above 20.000.....such a bargain is tempting since it could become a Maserati day every day although I appreciate is a diesel and only V6.......the V6 petrol are only a couple of grand more anyway

a)What would you suggest?
b) I am aware of 4200 and grandsport weak spots (clutch, matrix core, wishbone). What about the Granturismo and new quattroporte?

Ideally I would love to buy a car from someone from this forum.

All the best to all,

F

Forget the value / depreciation curve. This is not why you buy a Maserati and anything is a guess.

Personally I'd buy a GT all day. Owned a 4200. Been in a GS. The GT is way ahead (as you'd expect given the time difference). I expect just about everyone else to disagree with me (again) :D

See my favourites below, first choice is the grandsport.....

As always I am sure you are right Catman. probably the Granturismo is a car that I could use for some long journeys with no stress but lacks the instant classic style of the grandsport. Just the infotaiment....it will age very badly. I know diesel is a bad word but a quattroporte like the one below is tempting and should have relatively low cost.....cheaper than my current SUV for insurance, tax disc and fuel consumption.....
I will keep it away from central London so an option for me, and perhaps the reason why they are so cheap

I'd buy the modern QP at that money and use it every day.
It ought to be a lot more reliable too.

Based in Australia..... ±10 GMT.... So you might like to think of that as being in the future... By which I'm happy to inform you your choice of the GS has proven to be an astute one.

You have definitely preferred the trinity of man, machine and road relative to those two other luxo barges you had been contemplating. I can only presume it was the GS that has seen you flanked by 4 latin supermodels, and become a coveted social media {the less important SM} influencer.

Well done to you!

{if i may recommend the spyder.... Nothing at all about pushing market demand higher...}

But it's a Chrysler.. Sorry I might be tempted in the future but I cant see past that it's a Chrysler 300 on a stretched pan with Chrysler knobs and same infotainment. I know QP5 is same re Fiat/Ferrari parts bin but there is a difference in my limited brain.

How engaged do you like your driving to be? If you like to hustle it and cruise, choose the GS. Suspension in sport mode is very harsh, but it’s much more engaging to drive than the GT.
If you’re more likely to cruise and hustle it occasionally, the GT. MC Stradale aside it’s a lot more comfortable than the GS but it’s also heavier and physically bigger.
If you’re using it everyday, the QP.

Much depends on your intended use and what you feel comfortable with; weekends and sunshine, daily driver, sports car, or a bit of each. The best compromise is probably the GT but check for Variator issues, some find the GS a bit harsh (nice though), and the QP is big.

You chaps know the best thing about this conundrum? We get a choice. Think about Maserati in the DeTomaso years, it's much better now. Lots of great cars to choose from.

If I was going for a QP diesel I would look at this one. Same miles but looks a better spec and its from a Maserati dealer.......For me seems a good price from a dealer.

As I above it's all down to your personal circumstances, personally none of your 3 would be my choice, I find the GS to harsh, the QP6 especially with a diesel just wrong and as much as I love the shape of the Granturismo I just can't get over it's size.

I think a properly sorted facelift 4200 is the best of the recent Maserati range but as with all the above just my opinion

Go for the car you want, not what we may advice... you have picked up most of the issues/costs already and noted which ones are going to fall the most.

The only point I would make is, if you want to drive it and keep resale as high as possible don't go for a low miles car as the two are not that compatable.

I agree with lots of the above, and think the answer depends on whether this would a) be your only car, or one of several, and b) what type of driving you want to do in it.

I owned a Granturismo S as my daily driver, and it was lovely. However, it then morphed into being a weekend toy, and (IMO) it’s too big and too heavy to really enjoy on English country lanes.

This is why I swapped it for a late GS - which is perfect for what I want it for.

I wouldn’t want to drive the GS every day though, as even when not in Sport mode the ride is still pretty harsh... I think some have swapped to 18” wheels which apparently helps, but never done it, so can’t really comment.

The only reason to buy a QP diesel for me would be if you were going to be doing lots of motorway miles and you need to be conscious of fuel costs... personally I still wouldn’t.

Just my two cents worth...
