Be careful about drawing too much WhatsApp traffic back to the forum.....Assuming a key success factor for the forum is number of active members you don't want to alienate group (b).

Exactly. Group (b) represents the vast majority of the membership. The overall membership in turn interests the forum sponsors, without which, would there be a forum? Don't know. If group (a) bods are turning to whatsapp because they're bored of the same old same old is it any great loss their posts here are limited. It's hardly relevant to the majority. A bit of banter is fun but it's not the be all and end all.

The knowledge database is key to members joining and staying. Anything else thereafter is a secondary bonus.

I took myself off the WhatsApp groups as well, just have too many and I have now seen and forwarded every meme ever created! I think there are lots of reasons for a perceived drop off, WhatsApp may well be one as the WA group has progressed beyond a common interest in Maserati and onto some other common interests (say no more).

As usual, I blame Maserati in part for not giving use enough new stuff to talk about though. Did you all see the Monza Ferraris announced yesterday? Surely Maserati, with all that F1 heritage and 50 years on Ferrari, should be doing stuff like this? A Fangio f1 inspired, roofless, maniac car that Benny can aspire to replace his Frankenstein Sypder with one day?

How about a closed forum section where Centenary Club members and newcomers can donate to the Bone Cancer Research Trust to get unrestricted access to a mod-free banter room? A bit like how Babestation operates. Or so they tell me. Luckily we have a member or two that understands the Pay Tv and Content worlds that could maybe use those skills here to increase inappropriate traffic while also raising a few quid for a great cause?

Have you considered an "adult stuff ect" section on the forum, in which you would have to ask yourself to be added? If you're not added you don't see the section.

Although I fully appreciate that.... A) This is not the direction you would want to take the forum in. B) I'm a <100 post new chap.
Good idea. You could have a sub heading of "Banter and B?llsh!t"

I think this is it. If posts and membership are still expanding, and I think most people who've commented find the forum and Whatsapp serve different purposes. (Someone call my confirmation bias if they can be arsed to count)

I think somehow forcing the two to 're-combine' won't be successful for either a or b.

However if most of the mods are now in Whatsapp and not on the forum (or just not on the forum), perhaps there's another thing to look at?

WhatsApp.

The problem with that is it is just continuous chat. Good for banter or on a trip. Etc.

But when you have around 20 or more people on it chatting rubbish it is tedious unless you are actively partaking.

Not sure what SM would gain from it a part from website traffic.

It wouldn’t be useful to anyone.

The website is better as you can search and subscribe and participate on topics you find interesting.

My personal opinion is there is no point in merging the traffic. It has no value to the Maserati community.

I was wondering what happened to the old crowd.

good point C, recombine the forum and WA maybe not the answer.

the forum is great place to be, to read and a database full of Mas knowledge. if figures are good then maybe something to just monitor...

as its a great car forum, maybe build on this - expand and market on the sub-sections of the other italian makes or add more supercar options: Aston, Mclaren etc and become a database of knowledge for these makes...

As the worlds greatest Maserati Forum and also the worlds greatest thread drift forum, I think that WA adds to it. We have had the odd member banned on here and otherwise VERY little moderating is required, we are all a great and respectful community. WA threads I've been on have seen far more people come and go as their personal tolerance level has been reached or breached! with WA however you can opt out very easily or you can stay and fight your corner if you want to. Yes indeed switch off notifications on groups or you will never get peace. have a broad mind, greased shoulders and shout up if something beaches common rules of decency etc. I think they work well together and WA will pass as BeBo, Friends Reunited and any other manner of social media have.

I hear it is likely to snow this weekend!

I would say I’m a type b member, and whilst it’s clear that there is a group of members on here who obviously know each other really well, and have become personal friends, I don’t think I’ve seen examples where I felt the “in” crowd were disrespecting the posts of newbies or of other occasional contributors.

Having said that, it’s clearly sensible to explore what might help make the forum better for all the different types of members and I think it’s a great example of what makes this forum work so well that this is being talked about openly.

My two cents on the topic are:

I think it would be worth looking into whether there’s a way of bringing the people who are chatting via What’s App back onto the forum.

For example, is there a way of building in a functionality similar to What’s App as part of the forum, so that if a thread was started and people wanted to take it into a group chat (only visible to those invited) they could.

On the main forum this would mean the final post on that thread was something like “this thread has gone private... click here if you would like to join”... however the key point would be that people would need to access this via the forum, which might prompt them to read the other threads and join in with some of the public, open to all, threads....

I also think the idea of having moderators drawn from both the type (a) and type (b) groups is worth exploring, as this would provide broader perspective, etc.

The problem with WA is it is no holds barred posting and there will be a few snowflakes offended by it as they don't realise that most of us long termers actually know each other very well and are drinking buddies and see each other outside of forum events...

SM is like a pub. It has its locals, and others who drop in from time to time. WA is when someone has a party at their house. Someone invariably gets a bit gobby and has to go to bed early to recover their dignity.

There's a place for both, but we don't want the pub to miss out on trade because all the locals have buggered off round one of their mate's houses.

Spot on, although some are gobby all the time but that is their character ;)

Perhaps there is a third group to consider too. My perspective is very much from group b but I suspect there will be long term regulars, those who like a quiet pint, that are quite happy when the noisy, boozy, gobby ones disappear.

I’d noticed the drop in posts but I don’t think that it’s to the detriment of the forum. Things are still discussed on the forum and creative ways found around the word censor.

I use WA for event based comms. It works well for that. To me they compliment each other rather than compete.
