Right, I've managed to find time to trawl through this thread and I'm amazed at the lack of drift!

For me WA works well on trips as an instant messenger, for assistance and group/picture messenger, but they must be shut down after the last man has got back. However the forum should be the focus of all things SportsMaserati. The hidden issue with WA is that it's fundamentally a security nightmare as we have to share numbers with others who we might not want to have contact with after the trip. They will still have your number. Even if you have blocked them. So before setting up a WA group get permission of those on the trip whether they want to share their number for WA or not. Just saying!

Thank you all, I think we have a strong idea of the seperate camps. Allan, I like your idea of a separate 'The Muppet Show' private forum where normal rules don't apply. How we police members on it....suggestions.

I can see the attraction. *Personally* I don't think people will use it as Whatsapp is so immediate and in your pocket, but since I'm not on the Whatsapp groups anyway, I'm hardly target demographic :D

There are a few pubs round the country called the Trident.

Have a section of the forum called 'The Trident' get members to agree to a disclaimer that anything on that part of the forum has nothing to do with SM (per se) and that anything goes.
All complaints need to be addressed to www.iamasnowflake.com and away you go.

As based on the Le Mans WA groups, some of the content is, well, very questionable, to put it politely.

With forum membership which is open to all, there is a sense of anonymity which can encourage unacceptable behavior, hence the need for moderators. I'm not for private forum areas as it could foster a "them and us" feeling which would not be good.
Can't stop WA. Some people will "meet" as a result of SM and want to have a their own chat group. Given Matt has looked at the figures, I don't think that the level of core SM activity is suffering too much personally! Ratio of drivel to gold dust is still very high!

yep agree with this - I think it would push the forum in a different direction away from what it is now. I think I maybe missing the point but what is the end goal you want Matt ?

In truth I hadn't noticed a drop in contributions from some other than Benny. Just thought maybe he was being detained in one of her majesty's finest establishments.
Like Enzo I am not sure what the problem is.
If contributions are up then does it matter who is doing the contributing?
Forums evolve as already stated.
Not sure about a separate no holds barred sub section.
I could see a situation where people go in to have a look out of curiosity. Things get said that offend them or they fall out with another member and that spills into the main forum and then the forum suffers.
Why not just leave it alone?
If the moderators are on WA and not on here then replace them but I haven't noticed. Other thing is in last while I have seen very little to moderate so that isn't even really an issue.

WhatsApp. The problem with that is it is just continuous chat. Good for banter or on a trip. Etc.
But when you have around 20 or more people on it chatting rubbish it is tedious unless you are actively partaking.
Not sure what SM would gain from it a part from website traffic.
It wouldn’t be useful to anyone.
The website is better as you can search and subscribe and participate on topics you find interesting.
My personal opinion is there is no point in merging the traffic. It has no value to the Maserati community.

I was going to comment on this thread, but then hoyin seems to have said exactly what I was going to say. So, job done.

I didn't necessarily mean private, but more a distinction, similar to SFW and NSFW. Enter at your own risk.

Well WA has proved it’s merits once again. For group trips it’s invaluable. To drop pin locations and share pics and itinerary updates.

For now we will keep it this way but close them after the events and force people onto the forum to give their thoughts and share their pics.
