Got around to cleaing the car after a 2K blast around Europe and my car seems to have caught something nasty from the French (or Swiss or Italians...) - Any ideas?

My son had something similar on his MR2 after it was stored in a damp garage for a few weeks. T-Cut had no effect, but it disappeared after a few days of warm sunshine, so my guess is moisture getting under the lacquer.

as per Phil H, although it's normally due to long term and also from having a car outside stored under a damp non breathable cover as well

I would say its been painted before and the lower lacquer coat has bloomed if its smooth to the touch.

There wasn't a massive bird plop there at any point was there?

I agree that it is likely to have been painted before. Maybe the lacquer was not applied quick enough after the base or contamination crept in there just before the lacquer went on.

Strange that you have had the car so long and it must have been painted prior to purchase but has only reared its ugly head now.

Try heating it gently with a hairdryer and see what happens.

PS - I don't think that's a stupid idea. But it could be. It feels logical based on the plausible possibilities mooted above.

Yes - no painting done in my ownership which is 5 and a half years now just about! Loved every minute of it mind you and odd that it's happened now. Right after MOB - either a speed rash or over familiarity with the other racier models on tour, so to speak.

Not sure hair dryer will make any difference since it's been exposed to the sun since we got back.

No bird sh1te there either and there's definitely no etching. It's definitely underneath the current clear coat.

Trying to find time to get estimates as it'd be great to be able to spruce her up

Interesting, 2 weeks after I got back from Europe and I have this on the roof, nowhere else, just patches on the roof but more or less all over it. Nothing I've tried will shift it and the lacquer is a little rough over it. Needs paint? Argh. It's one thing after another at the minute :(

Pictures can be deceiving and difficult to diagnose. Have you both tried:
- Hand in a plastic bag i.e. sandwich or fruit bag, ran over the "clean" surface? It's a lot easier to pick up imperfections in the surface of the paint that way
- How have you cleaned it? applying some IPA or panel wipe to clean up the area then wiping off with some de-ionised/kettle water
- Clay the area in addition to the above
- Sandwich bag again
- Applying some compound (halfords own works fine), Meguiars scratchX, or other mildly abrasive polish, by hand
- If all else fails, I would be contacting a local detailer (a proper one) for an opinion way before a paint shop. They will do much more technical version of the above to check/diagnose the apparent damage. They may even be able to wet sand if on the surface.

Yes, I've tried rubbing/blending compound, liquid clay compound, Tcut, super resin polish, everything apart from wet and dry really, so I think a trip to the detailers is in order, like you say,. Thanks.
