Hi all

Well back on the variator issues!

Just to confirm.
If the engine covers are blue = wetsump?

If so is the variator issue the same problem as dry sump, better or worse efc
I've have a early 4.2 Gt.
Thanks

Red is wet sump

It used to be the case that the Red cam covers were dry sump and the blue were wet.

I don't even know what colour the cam covers are on the GTS, I suppose they are blue.

The whole reason for dry sump is to reduce the height of the engine so it fits, hence why its dry on the coupe and wet on the bigger QP and GT.

Sorry I'm totally wrong! Red is dry sump - I just got totally mixed up. Gotta stop sniffing Ajax....

Just to make things a little more unclear, the 4.7 wet sump has red valve covers.

It’s probably easier to think of it this way, if you have to fill the oil through a cap at the side of the engine bay away from the engine it is dry sump, if you fill it through a cap on the valve cover, it’s wet sump.

Dry sump engines are not affected by the variator issue which required the bearing caps to be machined. But that’s not to say they don’t occasionally have issues.

My 06 QPV DS is dry sump, so if it's for engine height purposes, how come they used wet sump on the QPV later? Is the engine further back?

My understanding is that wet sump engines are simpler, and cheaper for day to day use. I'm sure someone will be along to correct me :)

So this my engine.
So looks like its wet sump with the oil cap on the blue cover.
So this is the variant prone to cam variator issues?

Yes, unless by chance you have an engine higher than the number which I can't recall....

Wet sump came about as a cost cutting exercise, at the same time they introduced the ZF automatic coupled direct to the back of the engine.

Dry Sump = all 4.2 liter engines from year 2005 through year 2007 mated to the duo-select transmission (red and blue cam covers). Wet Sump = from year 2007 and later, all 4.2 liter and 4.7 liter engines mated to the ZF automatic transmission (red and blue cam covers).

All GT and QP (and the girl from Cardiff) are wet sump with the exception of the early QP Duo Selects

All 4200 are dry sump.
