Welding hazards & HSE

Having a vested interest in h&s, I can't see a problem. Rather than weld a repair why not replace the part?

Even excluding manufacturing of bespoke parts, this is highly down to what the part is.
Think restoring classic cars - the cost differential between, say, replacing the front end of a classic Mini and a whole new body shell is very much in 2 different leagues, and in that example, I've picked a car for which you can actually buy a replacement bodyshell.

I guess the answer to why it's likely to be enforced rather than optional is simply that it's a danger thing. Surely when asbestos was found to be dangerous, similar stuff happened?

ESAB do a filtered battery mask for £300-400, but i think they have sold out!

We are going through the same thing here, not much fun. 2 sites with a lot of welding and then 150 techs over 17 other sites whom might occasionally weld.

Still deciding the best practical workaround. Might be allocating designated welders per site.

Masks have to be face fitted etc

At one site I recently had the fume/exposure tested to try and find out some facts.

Update; as expected the first authority has sent out their round robin email and theirs is essentially lead by their insurers. Mentions little about fumes which is a relief. It does however list many new requirements including, having a ‘watcher or watchers’ and post hot work fire monitoring time. As a solo operative this is a big issue I’ll have to work around. Typically a job has also come in today for them to weld two posts to containers to mount new CCTV cameras on. Ok except that it is < 10 m from the Bunded fuel safe!

I must check how the welders manage here, offshore. Many jobs are fab. shop with air fed mask etc. but many more are on site general stuff. Interesting.

Just completed a waste carriers license application and ordered tiny no smoking sticker for the van, both things our local councils in conjunction with the police have been enforcing in ridiculous ways!

Just Last week a fella picked a brand new van up from sign writers in Dagenham and was driving it back to his yard and got a £200 ticket for not having a no smoking sticker in it! He is a life long non-smoker and had they caught him smoking in the van? £60 fine....

A couple of months ago another east London authority issued a fine for non-registered waste carrier to a lad who had put his sandwich wrappers and other lunch waste in a black bag but because he then put the bag in the back of the van it was classed as commercial waste!

Infamy, infamy, they all have it infamy!!!!

Oh yes back to the stickers; they have relaxed the requirements for workplace no-smoking signs, there is now no no need for words, the cigarette on a white disk with red ring and strike through is fine on its own, there is no size requirement (I've gone for 20mm diameter) it just has to be placed in each closed compartment and in a 'prominent' position... Buildings have also been relaxed so that churches and the likes don't have to have the sign on the door! (I do always chuckle at the crematorium about that)...

Sometimes I don't know weather to laugh or cry, Who makes these rules up? EU? oh better not go there, that's a different thread!:lol2:

I'd say any 32/42/GS and QPV that has been used daily summer and winter, without any additional attention to the underside, will possibly be shiny on top, rotten underneath. Buyer beware!
