I was wondering if it was a safe practice for exhaust welders to disconnect the battery before welding to avoid short circuiting the electrical system.

Good practice perhaps but I think on modern cars any welding is Ricky.

Although not great voltage welding applies huge ampage, given your systems run on 12v and low ampage or lower in things like ECUs where components can be damaged by milliamperes. The risk is evident. But do we hear of cars being damaged after welding? I haven’t, I have looked quite extensively over recent years. It seems putting the earth as close to the weld as possible or even double earthing either side of the weld works for people.
