Where I live the water is well 'ard. 420ppm, which means that everything gets furred up in days. Can anyone recommend a good water softener or scale remover? The guys doing the bathroom reckon a Monarch Scaleout is superb, the other plumber who'll be fitting one reckons they're shite and there's no substitute for a proper softener that eats salt.

What collective wisdom from you all?

As a BWT registered installer, there is no substitute for a proper water softener that eats salt, just fitted a BWT WS555 last week, only way to go. Other makes are available and do just as good a Job.

We got a Harvey water softener fitted earlier this year - Best thing we've done to the house!

Our water was like liquid chalk before, and now it's slippery AF and no more scrubbing around the taps and shower heads!

I have a DualFlo, which is the trade only version of the Harvey water softener range. It comes with a longer guarantee etc. It is fantastic, as are all the salt versions and once you get one you won’t go back. No more limescale products, less shower gel and hair shampoo and a quick wipe of the surface removes the scum that used to take some serious elbow grease. Get one!

I'll also add that the installation by Harvey was really professional - I know it's a "premium" product, but we think it was worth it.

The plumbing under our sink all needed re-routing to fit the unit, and even though it took the fitter all morning and into the early afternoon, it was all included in the price (even sorting out our waste pipe that was at the wrong angle!)

We had a Kinetico water softener for 10 years. It did the job but eventually the internals became porous so we had to replace it. Had quotes from Harveys and Kinetico for £1,800 - £2,000. In the end, I took a risk on a Water2Buy product at a quarter of the price. It works perfectly, has adjustment for the hardness of your water, which the others didn't, has better throughput and the customer service is fantastic. Highly recommended. It still eats a lot of salt though.
